Report On Differential': Open Type Differentials
Report On Differential': Open Type Differentials
There is no specific rule in the rule book to use a particular type of differential given by their rule T8.3, so in this report Im going to explain all the possible types of differential commonly used in student formula, their advantages and disadvantages, with my recommendations. Open type differentials. The main use of a differential is to create a difference in speed between both sides of the car.The working can be clearly understood by watching the video in the given link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIGvhvOhLHU
Advantages 1. Simple, as we know, can produce difference in speed while turning. 2. Easy availability (in our case we already have one) 3. From my knowledge clearly can be used for racing but with certain provisions . Disadvantages
1.while cornering at high speed the inner wheel tends to lift creating a lose of traction in the inner wheels, by design of the open differential all torque from the engine goes to the wheel with less traction, so while coming out of the corner we dont have power in the outer wheel to come out fast. 2. This can be overcome by using stiffer suspension and by the use of sway bars, we cannot install sway bars as the frames been already designed. Limited slip differentials An LSD unlike the open type which transfers the same amount of torque, uses friction to transfer more torque to the wheel with more traction. There are many types of LSD Clutch type. Viscous fluid type. Torsen(which gets its name from Torque-sensing). Electronic locking Hydraulic locking
BOTH THE CLUTCH AND VISCOUS Provide torque transfer by attaching themselves to the housing stator, the working of the clutch and viscous LSD are given below .clutch type.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujsxq9WBllU .viscous type.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2bRb17jJ1U The picture below will give a better view of the clutch type.
TORSEN Torsen derived from the word torque-sensing works without the use of a stator unit (as in clutch or viscous).the working a torsen differential is very complex but it is the most widely used type in open road racing.Because it gradually transfers torque unlike the clutch type which locks the wheel when there is a sudden acceleration or deceleration.the working of this type is shown in the given link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9iPqIQ_8iM
Thus the types of differential has been discussed, the type which is commonly used in FSAE is the LSD provided by DREXLER which has a torque bias ratio of 4:1 which cost about 2 lakhs without tax. So alternatively eaton India has a locking differential in its product line up called the TRUETRAC its a torsen differential and has a comparable torque bias ratio of 3.5:1.
The following paragrah has been extracted from the eaton website. Truetrac Differential The Eaton Detroit Truetrac limited-slip differential is the pioneer in helical gear based traction technology. Wheel spin out is limited by the differential, which employs pinion- and side-gear separation forces to automatically transfer torque to the wheel with the best traction. Mobility, stability and handling are enhanced, and drivers can be confident knowing that up to 3.5 times more torque is being transferred to the high-traction wheel. Operation of the Truetrac is smooth and quiet, and the unit will engage without any driver knowledge or action required. It also has no wearable parts and requires no maintenance, meaning a lower overall cost for the customer. Truetrac Operation The Truetrac operates as a standard or open differential under normal driving conditions, allowing one wheel to spin faster or slower as necessary. When a wheel encounters a loss of traction, the gear separation forces take effect and transfers torque to the high-traction wheel. The helical-shaped pinion gears continue to mesh with the side gears with increasing force until wheel spin is slowed or completely stopped. When the vehicle exits the low traction situation, the separation forces cease and the differential resumes normal operation. Primary Applications Below is a list of common applications for the Truetrac. Units can be developed for front, rear and transfer case operation.
