Week One

Reading genre descriptive / Writing genre descriptive Focus words (and meanings) this week: These can be practised for homework, be used to make a picture dictionary, be displayed in the classroom with picture prompts and could be the focus of the first 5 minutes of each lesson along with games and activities which help consolidate understanding of the vocabulary. For those needing to continue consolidating sounds and simpler versions of the words, please enable them to do so.

This relates to the animals covered in week 1, the narrative in week 2, and the problem of deforestation covered in week 3. Teachers use this picture to generate discussion and idea sharing before and after shared reading, and to prompt ideas for writing tasks. Please use this picture in a way which best supports the learning for students in your classes.

Welcome to the rainforest! The Borneo rainforest is a habitat for many special and endangered animals. Today you will meet a rainforest animal called Sun bear. Sun bear has a small golden piece of fur on her chest that looks like the sun rising. This is why she is called Sun bear. She is a small black bear with smooth short fur. Her ears are round and small. Sun bear has an extremely long tongue. She uses her long tongue to get insects and honey out of holes in the trees to eat. She has very big paws. Her claws are long and pointed so that she can climb trees easily. Sun bear is very shy and quite. She likes to live by herself high up in the rainforest trees. Mouse deer Welcome back to the rainforest. Let me introduce you to another animal who lives here. His name is Mouse deer. Mouse deer has a face and a mouth like a mouse and a tail and legs like a deer. This is why he is called Mouse deer. Mouse deer has short brown fur. His body is about the size of a cat. His neck is quite short and he has a narrow head with small ears. He has large black eyes and a pointed black nose. Mouse deer has thin legs like pencils. He feeds on berries and fruit found in the rainforest. He is extremely shy and quiet. He is usually silent unless he gets a fright and then he will let out a loud crying noise. Proboscis monkey Its nice to see you back in the rainforest again. Come and meet Proboscis monkey. He is an endangered animal. Proboscis monkey has reddish brown fur over his body and a pinkish face. He has a big bulging stomach. His nose is very large and hangs down over his mouth. He feeds on fruit and leaves found in the rainforest. He likes to sleep in the trees

near the river and is an excellent swimmer, even in deep water. His toes are webbed to help him swim. If he gets a fright, he will jump into the river! He is loud and likes to make many noises including honks, roars and snarls. Pygmy elephant Its great to see you again. There is one more rainforest animal for you to meet today. Her name is Pygmy elephant. She is one of the most endangered animals on the Island of Borneo. Pygmy elephant is very small for an elephant. Her skin is thick and grey. She has a long thin tail, which almost reaches the ground. She has a long trunk and a small rounded head. Her ears and feet are large. She feeds on the grasses, leaves and fruit found in the rainforest. She is a very good swimmer. Pygmy elephant is a very friendly and a gentle little elephant.
