Interesting Railway Bridges

World's highest railway bridge Beipanjiang River Bridge in China . Height: 275 meters Main span length: 235 meters. Open in 2001.

The DanyangKunshan Grand Bridge is the world's longest railway bridge ( it is the longest bridge also). It is a164.8 kilometres long viaduct on the BeijingShanghai High-Speed Railway. Opened in 2011.

The world's largest stone railway bridge -SolkanBridge is a 220 m stone bridge in Slovenia

Causey Arch The earliest single span railway bridge in the world. Causey arch in Durham(UK) was built way back when horses were used to pull coal wagons on tracks.

In southwest Baltimore, near the MountClare station stands the world's oldest railroad bridge still in use. In 1982 it was designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. One hundred and seventy years after its opening it is still able to carry the weight of modern high-speed trains.

IronBridge, Telford, England Opened in 1781, was the worlds first cast iron bridge. The bridge and the surrounding area were granted World Heritage Site status in 1986 in recognition of their historical and cultural importance.

The Gltzsch Viaduct is a railway bridge in Germany. It is the largest brick-built bridge in the world, and for a time it was the tallest railway bridge in the world. It was built between 1846 and 1851.Look at the car for comparison of the size of the bridge work.

The QuebecBridge crosses the lower Saint Lawrence River to the west of Quebec City, Canada.Cantilever arms 177 m long support a 195 m central structure, for a total span of 549 m , the longest cantilever bridge span in the world (it was the all-categories longest span in the world until 1929).

World's Oldest RailwayBridge Narrow bridge, described as the "OldestRailwayBridge in The World" of Whitstable Railway Station(UK). It's claim to be the oldest appears to be on the basis of being the first bridge to carry passenger trains early as 1830.

The Landwasser Viaduct is on the Rhaetian Railway near Albula Valley in Switzerland.Built in 1901-02 it is one of many spectacular bridges and other engineering works of Rhaetian Railway which been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The popular Glacier Express and Bernina Express pass over it.

The place located in the neutral zone at the border between Israel and Jordan in considered the lowest railway bridge in the world at 257.5 m below sea level.

A few Indian Railway Bridges of Interest


A bridge at Vallarpadam with Edapally in the Kochi backwaters is the longest railway bridge in India at 4.62km. It is exclusively for container freight traffic, and was opened in April 2010.

The Nehru Setu bridge near Dehri on the river Sone( 3 km) if the second longest and can be called the longest passenger train bridge. The Ghambir Khad bridge between Jammu Tawi and Udhampur is 77m tall is the tallest railway bridge . Here is picture of the Ghambir Khad bridge taken from a train passing the bridge.

When it is built, the 359 m bridge over the Chenab river for the Kashmir Valley Railway line will be the tallest in the world . Planned 2015/16.

Pamban Bridge - The 2.065 Km was opened for traffic in 1914 and is one of the India's architectural marvels; it is a functioning `Bascule bridge', which can open up in the middle, in order to allow ships to pass through. Each of the two `leaves' weighs about 200 tonnes. About 10 ships cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers pass through the bridge every month.
