Solutions

What is 881,000 in normalized scientific notation? 8.81 105 8.81 88.1 104 881 103

SOLUTION
Scientific notation is a way of writing large numbers as n 10b where b is an integer and n is any real number. Normalized scientific notation ammends this format by specifying that the variable b should be chosen so that the absolute value of the variable n is 1 and < 10. For example, in scientific notation 11.1 103 is a valid way of writing 11,100 but in normalized scientific notation 11,100 must be written as 1.11 104 .

So, in this problem, 881,000 in normalized scientific notation is 8.81 105

Which of the following is a similarity between equilateral and isosceles triangles?

Both have three sides with equal length.

Both have three angles with equal measurement.

Both have at least two sides with equal length.

Both contain right angles.

SOLUTION
An equilateral triangle is a triangle where all three sides have equal length and all three interior angles have equal measurement (60). An isosceles triangle has two sides with equal length and two angles with equal measurement.

What is the root in 64 ?

3

64

SOLUTION
In a root equation the radicand is the number for which you are finding a root, the index is the number outside the radical sign ( ), and the root is the solution to the equation. In this problem, the radicand is 64, the index is 3, and the root is 4.

The inverse (1/n) of any fraction is that fraction "flipped" with the numerator and denominator reversed.

A circle has a radius of 8 inches. What is its approximate circumference?

50.27

78.96

64.00

201.06

SOLUTION
The area of a circle is given by the formula A definition, is approximately 3.14 so:

= 2r where r is the radius of the circle. By

A = 3.14 2 8 = 3.14 16 = 50.27
