Teaching English as a Foreign Language
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) involves teaching English to students whose first language is not English. This could be in the UK or overseas. The students may be children or adults, and be at varying levels of ability. The term TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) can also be used, but this commonly refers to teaching immigrants and refugees in the UK. If you are considering working as a teacher of English as a foreign language, either in the UK or abroad, further information is available at: The Prospects website - downloadable information on the work of a TEFL teacher, as well as industry insights into education, and country specific information. www.prospects.ac.uk/links/engforlan (TEFL) A Working & Studying Abroad handout, which has a section on Teachin g English as a Foreign Language, can be downloaded from the Careers and Employability website, www.mmu.ac.uk/careers/guides or collected from the Careers & Employability Service (based in the new Business School building) www.cactustefl.com is a comprehensive site offering a course list and extensive practical information.

Qualifications
TEFL qualifications are open to all graduates who are native English speakers or have extremely good spoken and written English. The two main accredited routes in TEFL or TESOL are: Trinity College London Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Cert. TESOL) www.trinitycollege.co.uk and University of Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) www.cambridgeesol.org/training Both are equally acceptable for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) jobs.

Alternatively, there are specialist Certificates by the same providers for teaching the 4-18 year age groups. All of these qualifications are internationally recognized and will give you the greatest flexibility in the type of language schools and range of countries where you will be able to find work. They are available widely in the UK and abroad, and can be studied full-time (typically lasting 4 weeks) or part-time .

What to consider when choosing a course.

Most reputable employers abroad will want one of the above qualifications combined with practical teaching experience. Courses vary in how much teaching practice they offer but remember that generally the more experience you can get on the course, the better. The course you choose may depend on how long you intend to work in teaching. If you only intend to do this for a short time maybe whilst travelling you may prefer a cheaper, shorter course. These are widely available. Some work closely with schools abroad and help place their students in teaching roles. There are also providers who offer courses over a few days and then guarantee you a post in one of their own schools. As always, you should think carefully before committing to any course or contract and be sure you have fully researched the provider and the jobs they are offering.
