Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: The Beginning of the Great War Content Area: History

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 10.5 Students analyze the causes and course of the First World War. Big Ideas: The Alliance System: The Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria, and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Russia, France, and Britain) The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand Nationalism Changing Warfare: New Weapons, Trench Warfare, Total War Battle Front vs. Home Front Unit Goals and Objectives: Students will be able to identify which countries were members of the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente and which countries were neutral at the beginning of WWI. Students will be able to define total war and give at least three examples of how it applies to WWI. Students will compare and contrast the different experiences of soldiers and people on the home front during WWI. Students will analyze the technological innovations of the war and their impact on soldiers in the field.

Unit Summary: This unit will focus primarily on the causes and early years of World War I. We will analyze the system of alliances that contributed to the entrance of various countries into the war. We will also explore the effects of total war on both the soldiers in the trenches and the civilians on the home front. Students will determine which technological advances had the greatest impact on the war and what tools were most essential to a soldiers s urvival in the trenches. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Brainstorm: What do you know about politics and society in Europe in the early 1900s? What do you know about their military capabilities? Formative: Discussion: What factors contributed to making Europe a powder keg waiting to explode into war? Simulation: Austria declares war on Serbia; what would your assigned country do (Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Russia)? Ranking: WWI innovationswhich contributed most to the evolution of total war?
