ACKNOWLEDGMENT
.
I also wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to my colleagues during the programme, in
the persons of Kayode, Oshiga, Kabiru, Chioma and Nnaemeka who all contributed their
views as at when needed and were always there whenever I called upon them.
Special thanks to Tolu Idris, Segun Okuneye, Lamidi Isiaka, Tola Olaayan, Andrew
Abaye, and all members of the department of project implementation for sharing their
To those not mentioned who contributed to my growth and made my stay a memorable
The one year internship programme was introduced to polytechnics to give national
diploma students the opportunity to get a feel of what it is like in the industry as well as
impacting practical knowledge to them.
The programme was also meant to assist them in making a choice on what options they
would like to offer in the Higher National Diploma (HND) program.
This report gives a detailed report of my skills and knowledge acquired, projects handled,
challenges and recommendations as a result of my stay in Telnet Nigeria Limited.
SKILL ACQIURED
I have a acquired a lot of hands on experience and skills a lot of which were strange to
me at the beginning. A lot of these skills were acquired on site as a result of projects
involved in and trouble shooting.
Site Survey
Site survey is usually done in two stages. One at the quotation stage and the other at the
start of implementation.
At the quotation stage, this is usually done to ascertain the items that will be required
before a quotation is sent to the customer. Methodology depends on the proposed
solution.
During implementation, this is done to a picture of required materials to avoid waste and
also budget creation.
Structured Cabling
Structured cabling defines how to lay the cable in a star formation such that all outlets
terminate at a central patch panel. The users are then patched from this central point to
the network devices.
From the start of the internship programme I have been involved in a lot of structured
cabling projects. My first day in Iteco saw me being attached to the Engineers involved in
structured cabling of Renaissance Capital office, Adeyemo Alakija Victoria Island Lagos.
This was my first experience of structured cabling and it served as a complete course for
me in structured cabling as it involved all aspects of structured cabling. We carried out
horizontal run of UTP cables spanning across five floors with users on each floor
terminated in a technical closet on each floor. At the user end, the cables were terminated
on quadruple and dual faceplates to provide for four (4) and two (2) users respectively.
These individual floors are then connected to the server room using fibre and UTP.
I was also involved in Local Area infrastructure for Toyota training school, Lekki.
Although I was later re-deployed to concentrate on British Gas, it also served to cement
my knowledge in structured cabling.
Other cabling projects involved in are Petrolbrass V.I, Nigerian Agip Oil Company.
The most valuable part of skills acquired. I was able to configure or participate in the
configuration of switches, routers, access points and call manager. This to me is the major
reason for applying to Telnet for my Internship programme.
A switch is a layer two device that forwards frames based on Media Access Control
(MAC) addresses on Network interface card (NIC). It is used to connect the end devices
to the network implementing a star topology. A router is a layer three (3) device that
forwards packet based on IP address on the packets. IP addresses are logical addressing
assigned to devices on a network to identify them uniquely.
I was able to effectively design and implement IP subnets and variable length subnet
mask (VLSM).
These network devices are the most essential part of a network and require careful
planning and implementation as mistakes are costly. For instance in the Voice over IP
configuration for StanbicIBTC Pension Managers, we experienced a situation where we
had a one way voice traffic and this caused loss of communication for one day.
Proper documentation is the key to successive project management and closure. It is also
essential for seamless handovers of projects and proper accounting. One major
documentation tool used in project handling is Great Plains Enterprise. It is used to
capture the total picture of a project in financial terms. The cost of the project is
calculated including materials, sub-contractors, and employee expenses and compared
with the project fee. This lets you know if the project is running a loss or profit and how
much.
Furthermore, proper electronic filing, sending status reports, making presentation and
project supervision were also not left out in the skills I acquired.
CHALLENGES
Although the experience has been wonderful and fulfilling it did not come on a bed of
roses as I faced some challenges and issues. One of which is adjusting to the system
when I started my internship.
Also there is also the issue of transportation to site. This was usually a major issue in
project implementation department as Engineers find it difficult getting transportation to
site. This usually results in lateness to meetings and other engagements. As a result of this
we get faced with angry clients and customers. Initially, it was usually embarrassing but
with time I was able to adjust. Sometimes, we had to result to bikes which are usually
dangerous.
I also had to face the issue of timely delivery of materials. This usually affects project
delivery timelines and is usually a headache explaining to clients that the project will be
delayed because the required materials are not available yet.
RECOMMENDATION
Interns should be given proper induction and training before the commencement of their
program to enable them adjusts properly most importantly in handling projects. This will
prevent costly mistake caused by inexperience.
Finally, tools and materials required for working should be made available to ensure
timely delivery of projects and seamless operations.
CONCLUSION
My experience in Telnet Nigeria Limited has been fulfilling, educating, interesting and
rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunity given me to fulfill my dreams of an
internship programme in this reputable company. The level of education and exposure I
got cannot be measured.
