NO. 2 WHAT DOES WALKING BY SPIRIT REALLY MEAN?

(GALATIANS 5:16)

HH: Recently, my friends and I were so angry with the election results. Weve decided were going to protest. We will keep on fighting until we get what we want. So, are you joining? P: Thank you for inviting me. No, I wont be joining. HH: Ive been noticing Jehovahs Witnesses dont take part in rallies. But why not? Arent you going to fight for your own country? Its a noble thing to do. P: Oh, thats how you feel. The reason we Jehovahs Witnesses dont take part in such activities is because we follow what the Bible says at Galatians 5:16. Id like to show you this scripture. HH: (READ) What does it mean? P: The scripture says keep walking by spirit. To walk by spirit means we accept the action of Gods holy spirit upon us , we allow Gods holy spirit to influence us in our daily activities. The scripture says if we do this, well carry out no fleshly desire at all. Do you know what these fleshly desires are? HH: No. P: We can find out by reading Galatians 5:19-21. HH: (READ) P: Here it talks about the works of the flesh, our fleshly desires, which are things we as imperfect humans have a struggle against. Notice, one of the works of the flesh which we should refrain from, includes fits of anger. When people have demonstrations against the government, how would they usually react? HH: They would be very angry. Things could also become violent. P: Yes, the Bible calls this behavior as fits of anger, works of the flesh. However, when we walk by spirit, when we allow Gods spirit to operate upon us, we manifest good qualities. We can read about these good qualities at Galatians 5:22,23. HH:(READ) P: This scripture talks about the fruitage of the spirit, the good qualities we show when we allow Gods spirit to operate upon us. Notice here, that the opposite of fits of anger is self control. So, instead of being controlled by anger and behaving violently, we show that we walk by spirit by displaying self control.

HH: But how is that possible, since our natural human inclination is to get angry when provoked? P: What you said is true. We can illustrate it this way. Suppose theres a farmer who wants to cultivate his land. Of course, he needs sunshine and water, without it he cannot expect any harvest. But if the farmer himself doesnt work to cultivate the harvest, would he get any results. HH: No, the farmer must work hard as well. P: We can compare Gods holy spirit to sunshine. We need Gods holy spirit to manifest the fruitage of the spirit, good qualities. But if we dont work along with the holy spirit and didnt put if effort to show good qualities, would there be any results? HH: Of course not. We need to put in effort. P: If the famer wants a good harvest, he also needs to water his crops. In order to cultivate the fruitage of the spirit, good qualities, we need waters of truth found in the Bible and available through the Christian congregation. So apart from receiving Gods spirit and reading the Bible, Jws need to put in effort to manifest good qualities and attend Christian meetings, then they would truly be walking by spirit. HH: Now I know why you Jehovahs Witnesses are so different from other people. I think you people are really putting in effort to walk by spirit. Id like to know more. P: Thats great. You could come to our meeting this Sunday in Bandar Perda at 10 am. HH: Thats nice. Ill consider making plans to join you.
