ABOUT THE RENAISSANCE ACTING EDITIONS
Each play package in the Renaissance Acting Editions consists of a set of CueScripts and an unabridged Prompt-Script in modern font edited and prepared from
William Shakespeare's First Folio of 1623. A "platt" (a.k.a. a "plot," a running list of
entrances, exits, and major stage business) and instructions for assembling a cue-script
roll are also included.
Shakespeare's actors did not receive a copy of the entire script but instead worked
from "cue-scripts" or "part scripts" which contained only the lines and cues for a single
character. Elizabethan players would roll these up on wooden dowels forming a scroll
which could be "rolled" along as the play progressed - hence the modern word "role"
meaning an actor's individual part in a play. The Renaissance Acting Editions provide
these individual "roles" for those who wish to stage productions using "Original
Practices" or who simply wish to experiment with the early modern acting process.
The Renaissance Acting Editions are not direct transcriptions of the First Folio
texts. Original spelling, punctuation, and verse lineation have been retained throughout,
but minimal revision has been done (e.g., correction of missing entrances and exits,
restoration of simultaneous dialogue, etc.) to make the scripts more user-friendly.
NOTE:
Because it is expected that these scripts will be printed out for use in
theatrical production, the Renaissance Acting Editions are available for
download in a .pdf format which has been optimized for highresolution printing, not for screen viewing. Text will print cleanly but
might appear distorted in on-screen preview.
DEMITRA PAPADINIS, the creator of the Renaissance Acting Editions, is a
theatrical producer, director, and the founder of New England Shakespeare, a company
which since 1994 has staged Shakespeare's works using "Original Practices." A life-long
student of the early modern playhouse, she is an ardent First Folio enthusiast and an
expert in "Unrehearsed Cue-Script Technique," a performance method that seeks to
replicate the creative working process of Shakespeare's own company. She is also the
editor and annotator of the "Frankly Annotated First Folio" series published by
McFarland & Company. She lives in New Hampshire and New York City.
