Lesson Plan Science

This lesson plan outlines a 1-hour science lesson for 4 students on the properties of materials that can rust. The learning objective is for students to understand which metals can rust. The lesson begins with showing students various objects and having them observe and identify the materials. Students are then divided into groups to observe objects around the school and record which ones show signs of rust. Next, each group is given a set of objects to further observe and compare which can and cannot rust. Students are then asked to think of factors that cause rusting and one member from each group will present their ideas. Finally, students conduct a simple experiment to test if water, air, or both cause rust by exposing iron nails to different conditions and observing the results

LESSON PLAN DEDUCTIVE INQUIRY ACTIVITY (IN AND OUTSIDE ) Subject Lesson Topic Sub Topic Date Duration

Class No. of students Science Properties of materials Understanding that some materials can rust 20th JULY 2012 8.00 9.00am (1 hour) 4 3 Learning Objective: 1.5 Students can understand the property of metal which can be rusted. Learning Outcomes: At the end of lesson, the student should be able to: differentiate the rusty object and non-rusty object identify the object that can rust state the factors that cause rusting correctly. Pre- requisite knowledge: - In the students daily lives, they will find that some of the objects become covered with a layer of reddish- brown substance after sometimes. Scientific skills: Observing, communicating, relating, predicting, making inferences and conclusion

Steps Orientation (5 minutes)

Content The rusty objects are covered with reddish- brown substance.

Teaching and Learning activities Teacher will shows materials arounds us. Students will observe those objects and state the type of material.. Questions: - What do you see? - Can you name the type of material that you saw? - Do you know what is the reddish-brown substance on the nail? Teacher will divide the students into 5 groups. Activity 1: Each group will be given / X task to observe surrounding of school . They will make an inference about the rusty objects. Students will record their discussions into a worksheet given.

Remark Teaching Aids: Rusty objects (nails, hammer, and key) Skills: Observing- Students observe the condition of rusty objects. Teaching strategy: Transmission- teacher introduce the term rust to the students.

Elicitation of Ideas (15 minutes)

Field trip:
Material Rust ( Objects Nail Iron Glass Glass X Key Iron Spoon Iron Plastic Plastic X bottle Tin can Iron Wooden Wood X chopsticks Steel wool Steel Objects made from iron or steel can rust

Teaching Aids: 1 set of objects(rusty nails, glass, rusty keys, rusty spoons, plastic bottle, rusty tin cans, wooden chopsticks, steel wool) for each group, worksheets (Appendix 10.1) Skills: Observing- Students observe the condition of the objects. Comparing and contrasting- Students will compare the condition between the objects made from iron, steel and non-iron. Teaching strategy: Guided discovery approach-teacher guides students to find out that objects made from iron and steel can rust Moral value : - Realising that science is a means to understand nature - being cooperative Skills: Making inference- Students attempt to make inference that: objects made from iron and steel can rust air and water can cause rust Predicting- students predict the influence of water and air to the rusting of nail. Teaching strategy: Discovery approach- students investigate the factors that can cause the objects to rust Transmission approach- teacher has to explain the facts that students do not know. Teaching Aids: Apparatus (test tubes, iron nails, rubber stopper, dry calcium chloride, tap water, boiled water, oil), SEAM form (Appendix 10.2,)experiment worksheets for group A and B (Appendix 10.3) Skills: Observing- Students observe the condition of the nails.

Restructuri ng of Ideas (10 minutes)

Factors that cause objects to rust: Water and air

Students will be required to think of the factors that cause objects to rust. One member from each group will present their ideas(answer for the worksheet) in front of the class. Teacher will correct the students if there is any mistake. Discussion: What are the other objects that can rust? Do you think a nail can rust if it is exposed to i) air only ii) water only iii) air and water?

- Presentation from students - Discussion: Other examples of objects that can rust: Car, bicycle, paper clip, scissors, gate Rust form in the presence of both water and air. Applicatio n of Idea (20 minutes)

Testing the factors that cause rusting. The result should be as below: Students will carry out a simple Experiment A: experiment to prove that the The appearance of iron both water and air can cause nail rust. Test tube At the Teacher will assign group 1- 3 After one beginning week to do experiment A while of the test group 4- 6 will do experiment With tap water Smooth Rust B
