Hereweareprovidinganexampleofhowtoconfigureawirelessaccesspoint(aDLinkaccess point,inthiscase).Theseinstructionsareprovidedforillustrativepurposes,anddonot representanendorsementoftheDLinkaccesspointoverothercompetingproducts. Pleasetakethefollowingsteps: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Changethedefaultadminpassword. ChangethedefaultSSIDtosomethingofyourchoosing. Enableencryption. DisabletheDHCPServerfunction,ifyouraccesspointhasthisfeature. Registerthehardware(MAC)addressofyourwirelesscard.

Withthesestepstaken,youshouldhavenoproblemconnectingsecurelytoyourwireless accesspoint. FollowingtheinstructionsfortheDlinkG700AP,poweritupandconnectthenetworkcable fromitthecomputer.Youshouldthenbeabletouseawebbrowserandconnecttoitand login.

Onceyouhaveloggedin,clickontheRunWizardbutton.

ClickonNext

GiveyourAccessPointanewSSID.Thisisthenamethatwillbebroadcastandthatanybodywill beabletosee,sopreferably,giveitanamethatdoesnotrevealyouridentityorlocation,justa bestpracticeskindofthing.MostAccesspointsdefaulttochannel6.If,liketheaccesspoint, hasanAutosetting,usethat.Thedefaultshouldbefineinmostcases.Ifyouexperience problemswithsignalinterference,youwillwanttologbackintoyouraccesspointandtrya differentchannel.

SelecteitherWPAPSKorWPA2PSK.Thesearethenewersecurityprotocolsthatreplaced WEP.(WEPhasknownsecurityvulnerabilitiesandshouldonlybeusedifyourwirelesscard doesnotsupportthenewerWPAprotocols.)

GoaheadandclickontheRestartbutton.

Youshouldseethismessageindicatingsuccess.

Goingbacktothestartpagefortheaccesspoint,clickontheDHCPbutton.

SettheDHCPServertoDisabledandclickontheApplybutton.Youshouldthenseethe successmessage.Congrats!Youaredoneconfiguringtheaccesspoint.

Thelaststepistoregisterthehardwareaddress(AKAMACorPhysicaladdress)ofyourwireless card.Onwindowssystems,openacommandwindowandruntheipconfig/allcommand.Then findthelistingthatmentionsWirelessNetworkConnection.Goto computingaccounts.ucdavis.eduandfollowthesamestepstoregisterthisEthernetcard,that youdidwhenyoufirstsetupyoursystemforResnetusingyourwiredEthernetconnection.
