The first grade teacher provides an update on caterpillars that were being studied but did not survive, likely due to insufficient food or dry conditions. She notes they will continue studying monarch caterpillars and butterflies through other means like books and photos. The letter also includes upcoming classroom activities, reading goals, special events, and supply needs.

Dear First Grade Families, Sad News: Our caterpillars did not survive. They did well for the first few weeks, and then started to die. We were able to see that they loved to eat milkweed plants and they grew tremendously fast at first. We also learned that organisms (living things) must have certain things in order to live: space, air, food, water, and shelter, and if they dont, they will die. We think the monarch caterpillars food source of milkweed was not sufficient or it was just too dry and so they did not get enough food to eat. We will continue to study the monarch caterpillars and butterflies, but we will rely on books, movies, and real photographs to see their life cycle.

I will be teaching students to be aware of their thoughts and leave tracks of their thinking by using sticky notes. We will be using various texts in our classroom-mostly non-fiction. I will teach the process and importance of turning and talking to a partner. The students will learn that listening and reading involve thinking and that nothing matters more than the thinking. The kids will leave tracks of their thinking with post-it notes. The students will learn how to work collaboratively with each other during the turn and talk times and they will be taught very important guidelines for the success of this. The students will learn to recognize many Text Features in books, newspapers, magazines, etc. and will see how that helps draw attention to important information and helps us to remember it better.
