Trade Mathematics Measurement

The document defines linear mensuration as the measurement in one dimension or of distances and lengths. It describes the two main measurement systems - the English system which originated in England and uses feet and inches as standard units, and the metric system which originated in France and uses meters as the standard unit divided into centimeters and millimeters. The document provides conversion tables and formulas to convert between the two systems of measurement.

LINEAR MENSURATION

DEFINITIONS 1. Mensuration the mathematics of measurement. 2. Linear Mensuration measurement in one dimension or measurement of distances/length. TWO SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT There are two systems of measurement: the English system which originated in England and the Metric system or Systems International (S.I) which originated in France. ENGLISH SYSTEM The English system is based on the foot as the standard unit of reference. A foot is divided into 12 equal parts called inches. Each inch is subdivided into 16 equal parts (16 graduations) and the smallest part is read 1/16.

The standard equivalents of length in the English system are as follows 12 inches (in.) 3 feet (ft.) = = 1 foot (ft.) 1 yard (yd.)

METRIC SYSTEM The basic/standard unit of length in the metric system is the meter. The meter is divided into 100 centimeters. Each centimeter is divided into 10 millimeters.

Other units of length and their equivalents in meters are as follows: 1 millimeter 1 centimeter 1 decimeter 1 kilometer = = = = 0.001 meter 0.01 meter 0.1 meter 1000 meters

We symbolize these lengths as follows: 1 millimeter 1 centimeter 1 meter 1 decimeter 1 kilometer = = = = = 1 mm 1 cm 1m 1 dm 1 km

CONVERSION TABLES Metric Conversion Table 1 millimeter 1 centimeter 1 meter English Conversion Table 1 inch (in.) 1 foot (ft.) 1 yard (yd.) = = = .0254 mm. 304.8 mm. 914.4 mm = = = 2.54 cm. 30.48 cm 91.4 cm = = = .0254 (m.) .3048 (m.) .9144 (m.) = = = 0.03937 inches (in.) .3937 inches (in.) 39.37 inches (in.)
