This document provides an overview of the Kinect technology. It discusses how Kinect uses an infrared projector, camera and microchip to track movement in 3D and provide a hands-free gaming experience. It also explores how Kinect's depth sensing, motion tracking and audio capabilities could be applied to fields beyond gaming such as robotics, video conferencing and medical applications.

Technology overview of Kinect Beginners guide to Kinect

How well can it be used in other fields other than gaming ?

Kinect launched for the Xbox 360 on 11/4/2010. Kinect builds :a) on software technology developed internally by Rare b) on range camera technology by Israeli developer PrimeSense.

Developed a system that can interpret specific gestures. Hands-free control of electronic devices possible by using an infrared projector, camera and a special microchip to track the movement of objects and individuals in three dimension.

Hence provides a wonderful real-time gaming experience.

MOTORIZED TILT

The Kinect sensor is a horizontal bar connected to a small base with a motorized pivot. The device features an RGB camera, depth sensor and multi-array microphone. This which provides full-body 3D motion capture, facial recognition and voice recognition capabilities.

This infrared image shows the laser grid Kinect uses to calculate depth. The depth map is visualized here using color gradients from white (near) to blue (far).
