Homework Set 1 2012

Groups 1 to 5 will present on designing a replacement water delivery pump for the CHE building by calculating power requirements, suggesting an actual pump, and reviewing supplied layout and catalog information. Groups 6 to 10 will present a preliminary feasibility study for a pilot project to capture and transport 10,000 tons of CO2 per year via pipeline from a power plant to an offshore storage basin, determining pipeline diameter and compressor requirements. Groups 11 to 14 will present a reactor design for stirring a zinc oxide nanoparticle suspension in ethylene glycol at 200°C and 3 atm, selecting motor and impeller equipment using provided geometry files. A class test will cover problems 4 through 8.

Homework Set 1

Groups 1 to 5 will present Problem 1 Groups 6 to 10 will present Problem 2 Groups 11 to 14 will present Problem 3 A class test will be conducted with problems selected from Problems 4,5,6,7,8

Problem 1
The water delivery pump of our CHE building is getting old. A layout of pipeline network in CHE building is given (LAYOUT.PDF). You are asked to design a replacement. Calculate the power required. Suggest an actual pump using online catalogue provided by suppliers.

Problem 2
An pilot project will be setup to capture CO2 from flue gas emitted from the coal fire power plant at Hsinda, Taichung. The project aims at capturing 10,000 Tons CO2 per year and transporting the CO2 by pipeline a saline basin bury site 150 km offshore. The CO2 must be buried underground at 15 MPa and 300 K The captured CO2 is produced at 0.2 MPa around 330 K. You are asked to perform a preliminary feasibility study of the gas transport system
Determine the diameter of the pipeline required. Determine the number of pumping stations required and power requirement of compressors Estimate the cost of compressors

Problem 3
Professor Chou of the materials science and engineering department asked me to design a pilot reactor for her. Initial geometry is given in the attached PDF file (REACTOR.PDF). Please decide on stirring equipment (motor and impeller) for the system. The reacting solution can be considered as a suspension of zinc oxide nanoparticles (size about 200 nm) in ethylene glycol. The reacting temperature is 200 oC at 3 atm.
