E-learning has its origins in the 1840s with Isaac Pitman's correspondence courses delivered via postal mail. It has grown with advancements in technology and the ability to deliver education via the Internet. E-learning includes lifelong learning opportunities across disciplines and is used in corporate and academic settings. Approximately 60% of learning now uses a learning management system (LMS) which stores and delivers online courses and allows students and teachers to share resources. Popular open source LMS platforms include Moodle, Claroline and ATutor while common proprietary platforms are WebCT, Blackboard, and eCollege. Standards continue to develop for e-learning content and systems to ensure quality, accessibility and interoperability.
