Assignment 3 IEM

This document contains 4 assignment questions for an aeronautical engineering test at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering. The questions involve designing different types of couplings and joints: 1) A protected type CI flange coupling to transmit 50KW power at 200rpm. 2) A bushed pin type flexible coupling to transmit 25KW at 500rpm. 3) A socket and spigot type cotter joint to connect rods under 100KN axial pull. 4) A knuckle joint to connect rods under 150KN axial pull. The questions provide material properties and design parameters to consider for each problem.

DAYANANDA SAGAR COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS FOR 3rd TEST

Note: Each question carries 10 marks 1) Designa protected type CI flange coupling to transmit 50KW at 200rpm. The maximum torque transmitted is to be 30% more the mean torque. The permisible values of shear stress and compressive stress for shafts, bolts, key may be taken as 40 Mpa and 80 Mpa respectivley. The permissible stress for CI may be taken as 10 Mpa. 2) Design a bushed pin type flexible flexible coupling to transmit 25KW at 500 rpm. Assume C40 material for shaft, bolts, and key. 3) Design a socket snd spigot type cotter joint to connect two rods subjected to a steady axial pull of 100KN. The material used spigot end, socket end and cotter is C40 steel. Take FOS as 4 for shear and 3 for crushing based on tensile yield strength. 4) Design a knuckle joint to connect two mild steel rods to sustain an axial pull of 150KN. The pin and the rods are made of same material. Assume the working stresses in the material as 80 Mpa in tension, 40 Mpa in shear and 120 Mpa in crushing.
