Parallel
Parallel
DEFINITION parallel interface allows the user to transfer data between two devices with eight or more bits at same time or simultaneously. It is also called as serial by word transmission.
ADVANTAGES:
The
speed of data transfer is increased when compared to serial transmission. Most computer terminals and periperal equipments process data parallely. It will avoid the conversion from serial to parallel. DISADVANTAGE: number of wires and number of conection get increases. It results in increase in complexity.
The centronics parallel interface was originally designed to be used for transferring data between microcomputer and a printer.
Data lines
There are eight parallel data lines d0 to d7. All these are unidirectional lines taking data from computer to printer. Characters are transmitted from the computer to printer in the form of seven bit ASCII.
Control lines
There are four unidirectional control lines to send the control information from computer to printer. The control lines are, strobe(STB) Autofeed(AF) prime(PRIME) select(SLCTIN)
Status line
There are unidirectional lines used for conveying the information from printer to computer. Through these lines, the printer tells computer what the printer is doing. The status line are, ACK ,BUSY, Paper out(PO),SLCT and ERROR
Miscellaneous lines
These include the return paths for STB,ACK,BUSY and PRIME lines. The frame ground (FG) which electrically connects the cassis of the computer and printer to reduce the possibly shocks. One more line is used for providing +5V ac to the printer from the computer.
