Ship Math
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1482. We are
going to add some numbers.
1. If Columbus sailed with 5 ships on her first journey and one his
second journey he took 7 boats. How many boats did he take?

2. If Columbus sailed with 10 ships to begin with but lost 4 ships how
many ships did he have left?

3. If Columbus sailed with 4 ships his first journey, 2 ships his


second journey, and 5 ships his third journey how many ships did
he take to the New World?

4. Columbus was a great explorer and found many treasures in the


New World. He had 12 ships and after his trip he filled up 6 ships
with treasures, how many ships did he have empty?

5. If Columbus traveled thousands of miles because he wanted to


prove the world was not flat. He started his journey with 7 ships
and when he came back from the new world he brought back 4
ships. How many ships did he come back with?

Before Amerigo Vespucci he needed to make sure to have


enough of everything to make sure he has enough supplies.
Look at the equations and find out if they are really equal or not.
1. Vespucci started with 6 bags wheat then bought 7 more. He
then had a total of 12 bags of wheat. Is this the right?
6 + 7= 12?
2. Vespucci had 8 barrels of water and 2 barrels broke. He
then was left with 6 barrels. Is this the right number of
barrels left?
8 2 = 6?
3. Vespucci was running late and dropped a pile of hay. He
began with 15 piles of hay and lost 1. This means he has 14
piles of hay left. Is this right?

4. Vespucci had 2 containers of spices, before he left he


bought 7 more containers. That means that he had 10
containers of spice left over. Is this right?

5. Vespucci wanted to make sure that they had enough ink to

bottles of ink. It is this right?
