The tongue is an important muscle organ located in the mouth. It contains around 3000 taste buds that can detect the four main tastes: sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. Different regions of the tongue are more sensitive to certain tastes, with the front detecting sweet and salty tastes and the sides detecting sour tastes. Taste buds contain receptors that detect tastes and are located on small protrusions called papillae on the upper surface of the tongue, soft palate, and upper esophagus. When food dissolves in saliva, parts come into contact with taste receptors within taste buds, which send this sensory information to the brain.
