This document provides 7 practice problems for students related to quantum mechanics. The problems cover topics like eigenfunctions of momentum and position operators, quantum mechanical state functions, particle in a 1D box model, probability density in a rectangular box potential, energy levels of a system of two non-interacting particles in a 2D box, frequency of radiation emitted during a transition between energy levels of a harmonic oscillator, and energy and orbital angular momentum of an electron in the 4f state of hydrogen. Students are meant to work through the problems before their tutorial date for discussion.

Home Assignment I (Due on August 9, 2011)

Notes for students: These problems are meant for your practice. Try to work them out but you dont have to submit your solutions. The due date simply means you are expected to solve the problems by that date. If you have any doubts, your tutor will briey discuss the solutions in the tutorials/discussions on or after the due date.

1. Find if the following functions are eigen functions of the momentum (px ) and 2 position (x) operators. (i) sin kx+cos kx, (ii) eikx , (iii) ex . Justify your answers. 2. Can eax be a quantum mechanical state function of a system where a is a positive constant and x +? Justify your answer. 3. The length of 1,3 butadiene molecule is 5.2 and it has four delocalized electrons. A Calculate the longest wavelength absorption in this molecule using the particle in 1D box model and assuming that the delocalized electrons are non-interacting with each other. 4. Consider an electron moving in a rectangular box of sides equal to 10 and 15 A A (0x10 and 0y15 ). The potential V = 0 inside the box and it is innite A A otherwise. (a) Write the wave function for the rst excited state of the electron and (b) Find the value of the probability density at the point x=5 , y=7.5 . A A 5. For a system of two noninteracting particles of masses m1 and m2 moving in a two dimensional square box of length a, (a) write the expressions for the ground state energy of the system. (b) What is the degeneracy of the rst excited state when m1 = m2 . 6. Calculate the frequency of radiation emitted when a harmonic oscillator of frequency 6 1013 sec1 goes from v=3 to v=2 level. 7. Calculate the energy (in eV) and magnitude of the orbital angular momentum (in units of h) of an electron in the 4f state of hydrogen atom.
