1. Calculate the tension T in the guy wire CD and the compression S in each strut of
the shear-leg derrick shown in Figure1. if the vertical load P = 100 kN.

3. (a) Distinguish between cone pulley and loose & fast pulley drive.
(b) A shaft rotating at 200 r.p.m drives another shaft at 300 r.p.m and transmits
6KW through a belt, the belt is 100mm wide and 10mm thick. The dis-
tance between the shafts is 4000mm the smaller pulley is 500mm in diameter
calculate the stress in,
i. Open - belt and
ii. Crossed belt. Take µ = 0.3. Neglect centrifugal tension.

and passing through the mass center. Base width= ‘b’ and height of vertex above
base= ‘h’. Density of material is ‘w’.
6. A ladder AB of 3m length remains in contact with the vertical wall and horizontal
floor and the angle of inclination of the ladder with horizontal is 600 . The ladder
moves such that its ends remain in contact with the vertical wall at B and horizontal
floor at A. If the end A moves with a linear velocity of 0.1m/s, find the velocity
of its upper end B. If the linear acceleration of the end A is 0.05m/s2 , find the
acceleration of the end B and the resultant acceleration of the ladder AB.
7. (a) A homogeneous sphere of radius of a=100mm and weight W=100N can rotate
freely about a diameter. If it starts from rest and gains, with constant angular
acceleration, an angular speed n=180rpm, in 12 revolutions, find the acting
moment. .
(b) A block starts from rest from‘A’ . If the coefficient of friction between all
surfaces of contact is 0.3, find the distance at which the block stop on the
horizontal plane. Assume the magnitude of velocity at the end of slope is
same as that at the beginning of the horizontal plane.

8. A vertical shaft 100mm in diameter and 1m in length has its end fixed to the
ceiling. At the other end, it carries a disc of mass 500kg having a radius of gyration
of 450mm. The modulus of rigidity for the material of shaft is 80Gpa. Determine
the frequency of torsional vibrations.

(b) Two rollers of weights P and Q are connected by a flexible string DE and rest
on two mutually perpendicular planes AB and BC, as shown in figure6. Find
the tension ‘T ‘ in the string and the ‘θ’ that it makes with the horizontal
when the system is in equilibrium. The following numerical data are given.
P= 270N, Q = 450N, α = 300 . Assume that the string is inextensible and
passes freely through slots in the smooth inclined planes AB and BC.
2. (a) Two boxes are placed on an inclined in contact with each other and released
from rest. The coefficients of static friction are 0.40 and 0.30 under boxes A
and B, respectively. Describe what happens.

(b) Determine the force P required to move the uniform 50 kg plank from its rest
position shown if the coefficient of static friction at both contact locations is
0.50.

3. (a) Derive an expression for length of an open belt in standard form.
(b) A belt is running over a pulley of diameter 1200 mm at 200 r.p.m. The angle
of contact is 1650 and coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.3
If the maximum tension in the belt is 3000N, find the power transmitted by
the belt.

5. A square prism of cross section 200mm × 200mm and height 400mm stands verti-
cally and centrally over a cylinder of diameter 300mm and height 500mm. Calculate
the mass moment of inertia of the composite solids about the vertical axis of sym-
metry if the mass density of the material is 2000kg/m3 .

target?. Also find the angle made by the line of sight of the pilot when the
bomb is released.
(b) The acceleration of a particle is defined by the relation a =kt-4. Knowing that
v=4m/s when t=2sec and v= 1m/s when t=1 sec, determine the constant ‘k’.
Write the equations of motion when x=0 at t=3secs.
7. (a) A body weighing 20N is projected up a 200 inclined plane with a velocity of
12m/s, coefficient of friction is 0.15. Find
i. The maximum distance S, that the body will move up the inclined plane
ii. Velocity of the body when it returns to it original position.
(b) Find the acceleration of the moving loads as shown in figure11. Take mass of
P=120kg and that of Q=80Kg and coefficient of friction between surfaces of
contact is 0.3 .Also find the tension in the connecting string.

2. (a) Two blocks, connected by a horizontal link AB are supported on two rough
planes as shown in Figure14. The coefficient for friction of block A on the hor-
izontal plane is µ = 0.4. The angle of friction for block B on the inclined plane
is ϕ = 150 . What is the smallest weight W of block A for which equilibrium
of the system can exist?

of friction are µ1 = 0.2 and µ2 = 0.3, respectively, find the angle of inclination

(b) Derive the expression for the moment of inertia of a homogeneous sphere of
radius ‘r’ and mass density‘ w’ with reference to its diameter.
6. (a) A body moves along a straight line and its acceleration ‘a’ which varies with
time ‘t’ is given by a =2-3t. Five seconds after the start of observation, the
velocity is 20m/s. The distance moved by the body 10sec after the start of
observation of motion from origin is 85m

i. the acceleration, velocity and distance from the origin at the start of
observation.
ii. the time after the start of observation at which the velocity becomes zero
and the distance travelled from the origin.
(b) A car is uniformly accelerated and passes sucessive kilometre-stones with ve-
locities of 20km/hour and 30km/hour respectively. Calculate its velocity when
it passes the next kilometre stone and the time taken for each of these two
intervals of one kilometre.

1. (a) Three identical cylinders, each weighing W, are stacked as shown in figure19,
on smooth inclined surfaces, each inclined at an angle ‘ θ’ with the horizontal.
Determine the smallest angle ‘θ’ to prevent stack from collapsing.

(b) The boom of a crane is shown in figure20, if the weight of the boom is negligible
compared with the load W = 60 kN, find the compression in the boom and also
the limiting value of the tension ‘T’ when the boom approaches the vertical
position.

4. (a) From first principles deduce an expression to determine the centroid of a tri-
angle of base ‘b’ and height ‘h’
(b) Determine the centroidal co-ordinates of the shaded area as shown in figure21.

5. Determine the mass moment of Inertia of the cast iron flywheel as shown in
(figure22). (cross section) with respect to the axis of rotation. The flywheel has six
elliptical spokes 30 × 40 mm in cross section. Cast iron weighs 7200 kg/m3 .
6. (a) A stone is thrown from the top of a building upward at an angle of 400 with
the horizontal with an initial speed of 30m/s. The height of the building above
ground level is 30m. Determine
i. The horizontal distance from the point of projection to the point where
the stone strikes the ground.

(b) A flywheel which is at rest attains a constant speed of 300 rpm after acceler-

8. A weight of 10N attached to a spring oscillates at a frequency of 60 oscillations
per minute. If the maximum amplitude is 30mm, find the tension induced in the
spring. Also find the spring constant and the maximum velocity in the spring.
