Partial Correlation

1) Partial correlation allows you to assess the correlation between two variables while controlling for the effects of a third variable. This isolates the direct relationship between the first two variables from their mutual relationship with the third variable. 2) The document provides an example using data on numerical intelligence, verbal intelligence, and age, where age is partialled out to examine the correlation between numerical and verbal scores independent of age effects. 3) For a coursework assignment, students are asked to use partial correlation to determine if the relationship between entrance exam scores and course averages is significant while controlling for IQ scores, using data from Work5.sav.

EF 5303 (DR SEE KIN HAI) Partial Correlation

1. 2. 3. If you find that a correlation between variables A and B is affected by their correlations with variable C, then you can adjust for the effects of this C by using partial correlation procedure. Correlation between A and B (before partialling) is called zero-order correlation. We can simultaneously control for several variables which may affect the correlation coefficient.

Example: Table below shows Numerical intelligence test score, Verbal intelligence test score and age in years. Here we correlate Numerical and Verbal scores and partialling out Age.

Coursework (Use Work5.sav) 20 students wishing to enter UBD were given IQ and tertiary entrance exam (TEE) tests. The 20 students were selected. At the end of the academic year the course average for the same 20 students were obtained. You wish to determine whether the relationship between TEE and course average is significant when IQ is controlled in the analysis. Use Work5.sav for your coursework
