Major Programs and Projects

The IT staff supported technology projects throughout the city government. They implemented three major new systems: a financial system, budgeting system, and cashiering system. For police, IT developed software to retrieve warrant information from municipal and county courts for officers in patrol cars. While supporting the new systems, IT also maintained the city's technology infrastructure by installing new computers for various departments, upgrading security and networking systems, and improving wireless access.

MAJOR PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS FISCAL YEAR 2010-11 ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IT staff continued to actively support

technology projects throughout the City to provide daily services to City employees who service the citizens of Abilene. During this past year, IT staff played a major role in the implementation of three major new systems including the new Lawson Financials system for City Finance and Purchasing, the new budget construction system Lawson Budgeting and Planning, and a new cashiering system PCI Revenue Collection System. For Police, IT developed a software interface to retrieve Municipal Court warrant information and deliver it to officers in patrol cars, and also created a new computer program which delivers Taylor County warrant information as well. This enhances the search capability so now officers are informed of both City and County warrants with a single query. While IT staff remained committed to supporting the new Lawson systems and expanding their capabilities, they also continued to support the rest of the Citys technology infrastructure. Examples include installing 139 new computers (including workstations, servers, and rugged and non-rugged laptops) for Police Youth, Transit, Planning, Public Works, Stormwater, Inspection Services, IT, Marshals, Municipal Court, City Managers Office, and Criminal Investigations Divisions, and Community Services, Water, Administrative Services and Fire Departments; upgrading security electronics at fire stations to provide better security and add wireless service for firefighters at each station; supporting the telecommunications conduit and cabling installation for Safety City; upgrading the existing copper to fiber optic cabling at the North East Water Treatment Plant high pressure pump building to eliminate failures caused by lightning and voltage spikes; upgrading the network security electronics for the central City and Public Safety Networks; upgrading to fiber-based Internet service at the Law Enforcement Center to provide greater capacity and facilitate a mobile data system upgrade; upgrading the wireless network service in City Hall to provide guest access to Internet for City Hall visitors; installing a new computer lab at Daniels Recreation Center; and replacing network electronics at Rose Park, Adaptive Recreation, Environmental Lab, and Civic Center to improve network speed and reliability.
