Conduction 1

The document describes an experiment to investigate heat conduction along a simple bar. A bar made of brass was used, with temperature measurements taken at regular intervals along the bar's length. As heat was applied to one end of the bar, the temperature gradient allowed calculation of the heat transfer rate and thermal conductivity of brass. The calculated conductivity values showed errors of 23-31% compared to literature values, potentially due to non-uniformity of the bar material or heat losses during the experiment.

Conduction experiments

Conduction along single bar

Objective:

To investigate Fourier's law for linear conduction of heat along a

simple bar.
Theory:
If a plane wall of thickness (dx) and area (A) supports a temperature
difference (dT) then the heat transfer rate per unit time (Q) by
conduction through the wall is found to be:
Q A.dT/dx
If the material of the wall is homogeneous and has a thermal
conductivity (K) then
Q = K.A.dT/dx
It should be noted that the heat flow is positive in the direction of
temperature fall.
