Glaucoma is a medical condition that has been known since 1832. The first case was identified in Pennsylvania in a man named John Russworth. It primarily affects people of African descent and runs in families, increasing one's risk if a parent or grandparent had it. While glaucoma can be managed and treated to prevent vision loss for most patients, it has no cure. Over the long term, if left untreated it will slowly cause vision to deteriorate due to damage to the optic nerve. Patients may experience blurry or rainbow-colored vision and should see their doctor if these symptoms appear.
