Democrats

The document summarizes the key differences between Democrats and Whigs in the 19th century. Democrats represented the middle class, small farmers, and Southerners and Westerners. They opposed large concentrations of economic and political power and believed government should not intervene on behalf of special interests. Whigs represented New Englanders, mid-Atlantic residents, and those in the Upper Midwest. They supported a national bank, internal improvements, and a protective tariff to promote American industry. Whigs also had closer connections between regions and were more open to reform movements.
