MUS 119 Concert Report

The concert had only about five audience members, making it feel more like a studio performance than a concert hall. The performer's breathing and rustling sounds carried well in the quiet venue, helping the listener focus on the performance. The performer played solo cello works without accompaniment. The listener most enjoyed the Suite V in C minor by Bach, feeling it told a story of agony through its sound and shifting tempos. Modern works like 10 Preludes for Solo Cello by Gubaidulina and the finale Gala Water by Beamish were difficult to understand and felt emotionless or boring to the listener.

MUS 119 Concert Report 106787913 Hwajeong Lee Performer: Sarah Biber (Mar 14)

In the concert, there were only about five audiences. It was more like to be in the studio rather than a concert hall. Even rustles sounded loud. Since it was so quiet, I could even hear performersbreathe and this made me more concentrate on her performance. Ive thought of cello as hard to performinstruments;it is hard to make its husky and gruff innate sound into majestic and magnificent music. What I like about cello is that with its low-pitched sound it can sound very elegant and refined.Unfortunately, however,I could barely hear the good sound in the few concerts that Ive been to.I went to the concert with high expectation. The concert was overall cello solo without any accompaniment. All the music except for the Bach were unfamiliar for me. Personally,I liked Suite V in C minor BWV 1011 by J.S. Bach the best. Even though there was not much ups and downs in the music, I felt as this music is telling a story about agony in a mood. The cello sound augmented its grandness of the music. In the first (Prelude), third (Courante), and fifth (Gavotte) movement, I could not figure out this music is whether duple or triple because the tempo was keep changing. The rest other movements were in duple meter. The music was in a sad mood partly because it in minor key. Spring Song by Augusta Read Thomas did not actually sound as spring. Rather it was more like winter song because of its dissonant harmonies. It sometime was in destructive mood; it was not that the destructiveness of sound gives the music vitality. I could not match the music to the spring while listening to it.

10 Preludes for Solo Cello by Sofia Gubaidulina was very unique. The player barely used her bow but used her fingers to play this music. The music was mainly composed of pizzicato. Also tapping on the cello body and the pizzicato without plunking were part of the music. It was not that rhythmic or inspiring though. This music was very modern that is hard to understand. Gala Water by Sally Beamish was finale for the concert. Honestly, this music was little boring rather expressing the tranquility of the Gala Water. The overall performance was neither much appealing nor attractive. I felt it as emotionless music. The cellist was more like reading the music score rather performing the music. Also, I could hear gruff sounds occasionally. But it was good experience.
