Classifying Matter
Classifying Matter
By now, you've learned about elements, compounds and mixtures. This will help you summarize what you've learned. It is HIGHLY recommended that you use this concept map to assist you in classifying matter! An ELEMENT is a pure substance that is composed of just one type of atom. Pictures A and B are both elements. Even though there are two atoms combined in picture B, it is an element because they are the same kind of atom. A COMPOUND is a chemical combination of two or more elements. It is considered a pure substance because it is made of just one kind of matter. The atoms in a compound are chemically bonded together. A MIXTURE is a physical combination of substances. It is not considered a pure substance because it is made of more than one kind of matter. Moreover, the atoms in a mixture are physically combined. Mixtures can be divided into homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. A homogeneous mixture is a substance in which the components are evenly divided (mixed); whereas in a heterogeneous mixture, the components are not evenly spread out. Generally, a homogeneous mixture can be easily separated out (such as salt water). A homogeneous mixture is also called a solution. A heterogeneous mixture is not easily separated.
