Differences Between Needham's 5-Phase and 5e's

Richard Needham proposed a 5-phase model in 1987 that is teacher-centered, with the teacher facilitating learning activities to encourage student participation and preparation. Roger Bybee proposed the 5E model in 1989 that is more student-centered, with students actively involved in inquiry-based learning with little teacher guidance and asking their own questions. The teacher's role in Needham's model is to engage students, while in the 5E model the teacher acts as an observer and facilitator by asking open-ended questions to encourage student investigation.
