SAB Assignment No. 2

Open source software makes the source code available to users, allowing them to use, modify, and share the software. It is legally protected by licenses like the GPL. Examples include Linux, OpenOffice, Blender, and Mozilla. Closed source software restricts access to the source code and modifications. It is owned by a single organization. Users must wait for new versions from the developer as they cannot modify or improve the software themselves. Examples are Windows, Adobe Flash, iTunes, Photoshop, and some versions of Unix.

OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE / FREE SOFTWARE

VS.
CLOSED SOUCE SOFTWARE / PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE

Open source software can be defined as those software in which source code is made
available in human readable form, where source code refers to the foundation of the
computer program (the text which makes up commands to the computer). But open
source does not just mean access to the source code but it also allows users to use,
change, improve, and to redistribute the software in modified or unmodified form. Once
the software is modified it is obligatory to share it with other members of the community.
Open source software and its authors are legally protected by the GPL (General Public
License). Software published under the GPL allows end users to use them for free and
give it to as many people as they want.

Well known examples of open source software are Linux, Open office, Blender (3D
graphics and animation package), Mozilla (web browser and email client), MySQL
(database), and GNU Compiler Collection etc.

Closed source software are those computer software on which the purchaser, or
licensee, is given the right to use the software under certain conditions. The producer has
set restrictions on use, private modification, copying, or republishing. They are owned by
one organization. The main thing that differentiates open source software from close
source software is that source code is not provided or even if it is made available than it is
in computer readable form (i.e. binary codes). If you are using close source software, the
vendor has an obligation to assist you in a timely manner, especially where security bugs
are involved. But it also creates a monopoly in the market, for those who prefer using
close source software have to wait for the modified and new version of the software as
they can not modify it due to unavailability of source code.

Well known examples of proprietary software include Microsoft Windows, Adobe Flash
Player, PS3 OS, iTunes, Adobe Photoshop, Google Earth, Mac OS X, Skype, WinZip,
and some versions of Unix.
