ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (EEE-201)

ASSIGNMENT: MAGNETIC CIRCUIT

1. A coils of 200 turns is wound uniformly over a wooden ring having a mean circumference of 600 mm and a
uniform cross sectional area of 500 mm2. If the current through the coil is 4 A, calculate:
(a) the magnetic field strength,
(b) the flux density, and
(c) the total flux
Answer: 1333 AT/m, 1675×10-6 T, 0.8375 mWb

2. A mild steel ring having a cross sectional area of 500 m 2 and a mean circumference of 400 mm has a coil of 200
turns wound uniformly around it. Calculate:
(a) the reluctance of the ring and
(b) the current required to produce a flux of 800 mWb in the ring. (Given that µr is 380).
Answer: 1.677×106 AT/Wb, 6.7 A

3. Fig.Q3 shows an iron circuit with a small air gap cut in it. A 6000 turn coil carries a current I=20 mA which sets up
a flux within the iron and across the air gap. If the iron cross section is 0.8×10 -4 m2, the mean length of flux path
in iron is 0.15 m, µr = 800 in iron and air gap length is 0.75 mm, calculate the air gap flux density. It may be
assumed that the flux lines flow straight across the air gap, i.e. air gap cross section is also 0.8×10 -4 m2.

Answer: 0.16 T

4. Explain the hysteresis in brief. Also define the Following terms:

(a) Residual flux density
(b) Retentivity, and
(c) Coercivity

5. An iron ring of mean circumference 1.2 m is uniformly wound with 400 turns of wire. When a current of 1.5 A is
passed through the coil, a flux density of 1.25 Wb/m 2 is produced in the iron. Find the relative permeability of
iron under these conditions.
Answer: 1990

6. Give the proper analogy (Similarities & Dissimilarities) between Electric circuit and Magnetic circuit.

7. An iron ring has a cross-section 3 cm2 and a mean diameter of 25 cm. An air gap of 0.4 mm has been made by a
saw cut across the section. The ring is wound with 200 turns through which a current of 2A is passed. If the total
flux is 21 × 10-5 wb. Find the permeability for iron.
Answer: 2470
8. Two coils A & B of 60 and 100 turns respectively are wound uniformly around a wooden ring of mean
circumference 80 cm. The cross-sectional area of the ring is 4 cm 2. Calculate (a) self inductance of each coil (b)
mutual inductance between the coils (c) emf induced in the coil B when a current of 2A in coil A is reversed in
0.01 seconds.
Answer: (a)226.2 µH; 6.283µH (b)37.7µH (c)15.08mV
