Laplace Notes

The document provides an overview of the Laplace transform, which transforms difficult differential equations into simpler algebra problems. It defines the Laplace transform and gives some examples of taking the Laplace transform of basic functions. It also covers the inverse Laplace transform and properties like the first shift theorem and multiplication by t. Examples are provided to demonstrate solving problems using these properties and taking inverse Laplace transforms.

The Laplace Transform

The Laplace transform is to transform the difficult differential equations into simple algebra
problems (transforming the equation in "t-space" to one in "s-space") to makes the problem
much easier to solve.

If needed we can find the inverse Laplace transform, which gives us the solution back in "t-
space".

Definition of the Laplace Transform

For a function f(t) defined on , its Laplace transform is denoted as F(s) obtained
by the following integral:

Example 1: L{ f (t )} = k which is k = constant

Solution 1:

Example 2: L{ f (t )} = e 4t

Solution 2:

First Shift Theorem

The first shift theorem states that if L{F(t)} = f(s)

Then L{e-atF(t)} = f(s + a)

Example 1: Solve first shift theorem on L{e-3t sin2t}

Solution 1 :
L{ sin2t} = 2/(s2 + 4)

t – multiplication

If L{F(t)} = f(s)

Then

Solution 2 : First you have to solve L{tcosh3t}:

Proceed L{t2cosh3t} as follows:

se both chain rule and derivative quotient rule.

Definition of the Inverse Laplace Transform

If the Laplace transform of is , then the we say that the Inverse Laplace
Transform of is .
