MICR is used by banks to process large volumes of checks faster by encoding bank identification, account numbers, and check numbers using special magnetic ink and characters. The MICR reader scans checks and sorts them for distribution or further processing based on this encoded data. While MICR allows for easy and highly secure reading with low error rates, the equipment required is expensive. Optical mark recognition uses scanning to recognize pre-specified pencil or pen marks, making it useful for grading tests or collecting selected data. Bar code readers use lasers to scan patterns in bar codes which reflect light differently to identify the encoded information, with universal product codes being the most widely known standard.

Micr is used by banking industry for faster processing of


larger volume of cheques

number and cheque number are pre-printed (encoded)
using character from a special character set on all
cheques
