MANAGING ANTENATAL PATIENTS

There is a need for an appropriate and up to date guideline on the management of anaemia in pregnancy
as recently it has been made a national indicator. Attached is the hard and softcopy of the prepared ‘easy
to follow’ guideline to be used in all government health centers which manages antenatal cases

On the second matter, I would like to request the state pharmacy store to acquire Iberet tablets for the
management of anemia in pregnancy as in the attached guideline. Iberet is listed in the National Drug
Formulary list of approved drugs (attached).

Iberet is listed as an ‘A’ class drug item, even though it is a relatively inexpensive and safe drug to use. I
would like to request that Medical Officers in hospitals without specialists, KKIA and polyclinics that
manages antenatal patients are allowed to prescribe this drug for the management of difficult to manage
anaemia in pregnancy as per guideline.

It would not be practical to allow only FMS and O&G specialists to prescribe this useful drug in the
Sarawak context and would surely inconvenience our patients and may lead to sub-optimal management
of this condition.

Please distribute the attached guideline accordingly.
