THE HAMMER PHILOSOPHY
• HAS TO BE AN ATTITUDE OF UNSELFISHNESS
• THERE’S COMPLEXITY IN THE SIMPLICITY
• WE EXECUTE AN OFFENSE THAT HAS BEEN
DEVELOPED OVER 6 YEARS . TEAMS TRY TO
PREPARE FOR IT IN A WEEK.
• EXECUTION OVER ATHLETICISM. (WE ARE
SYSTEM DRIVEN AND NOT ATHLETE DRIVEN).
• WE HAVE THE SURPRISE ELEMENT
THE HAMMER PHILOSOPHY (CONT)
• GAME SHAPE IS VERY IMPORTANT
• WEIGHT TRAINING WINS BALLGAMES
• FEW, BUT PERFECT PLAYS (GOAL IS TO BECOME A
ONE PLAY OFFENSE)
• GAMES WE WOULD HAVE NORMALLY LOST
BECOME S COMPETITIVE AND OR VICTORIOUS
• EXCLUSIVENESS (MOST PEOPLE DON’T HAVE THE
BALLS TO DO WHAT WE DO)
• BALL POSSESSION

CONDITIONING (22, 23, 28)
• CAMP JOHNSON (13 PRACTICES IN 4 DAYS)
• WE USE THE BFS SYSTEM
• WE LIFT 3 TIMES DURING THE SEASON
(MTW)BEFORE PRACTICE
• WE WANT STRENGTH INCREASE BECAUSE WE
PREPARE FOR A 14 GAME SEASON
• WE WANT TO FINISH STONGER THAN OUR
OPPONET EACH GAME.
• WE RUN GASSER DAILY (SKILL 35 – 50); (LINE
25 – 30 PLUS THE SLED) TIMED.
1. WE FLIP OUR LINE
THE HUDDLE
A. BEST BLOCKERS TO THE POWER SIDE.
B. BEST PULLERS TO THE QUICK SIDE.
C. WE SET THIS TENDENCY ON PURPOSE.
2. THE NUMBER 2 OR 1 TELL OUR OL WHETHER TO GO RT
OR LT.
A. BY DEFAULT WE ARE IN FORMATION 2
3. QB MUST HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF THE HUDDLE
4. EVERYONE MUST LISTEN SO THEY HEAR THE PLAY CALL
5. PLAY IS ONLY CALLED ONCE. EX. “2 EAGLE, HAMMER RT
ON 3”
6. EVERYONE IS IN A 2 PT STANCE READY TO RUN A PLAY
BECAUSE WE DO SNAP ON THE FIRST SOUND.

BASIC BLOCKING PHILOSOPHY
“IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE BALL YOU
ARE BLOCKING”
1. SAB FOR ALL PLAYS
2. WANT TO GET AS MANY BODIES WE POSSIBLY CAN TO THE POA.
3. WE USE THE RED ZONE PHILOSOPHY OF JIM AHERN
4. BITE THE CROTCH; PRESS THE HIPS
5. WANT TO DRIVE THE PERSON THEY ARE BLOCKING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD.
6. 4 OF OUR STARTING OL WERE NAMED ALL – STATE IN OUR CLASSIFICATION.
7. WE USE THE SLED TO INSTILL IN BLOCKERS THE IMPORTANCE OF DRIVING THEIR MAN
8. WE USE SHOULDERS TO BLOCK. LESS THAN 25 HOLDING PENALTIES OVER 6 YEARS.
THE SHIFT
• Some years ago while viewing a video, the
presenter stated that “it is commonly said
that an offense has two distinct pre-snap
advantages over any particular defense: one,
they know the snap count and two, they
know where the ball is going. Once the ball is
snapped those advantages disappear, but
there are other factors post-snap, such as
movement and deception, to help leverage
defenses.”
• When doing the research and understanding how this
offense worked and listening to other coaches talk
about the pitfalls they ran into, we thought the if we
could add another element to the offense without
abandoning the true concepts of the offense we
would be on to something.
• Remembering a highlight tape I saw of Colton High
School in California I dug the tape viewed it and
discovered that was the missing ingredient we
needed. The main reason I embraced this method
was that it involved movement of all 11 offensive
players, which I believe is very important if you are
going to integrate movement into your offense.
• The use of the Cowboy shift and the ability to
move to any formation by the backs and
receivers (and linemen) answered a major
question for our staff and more importantly
the players. The question being what do we
do when they start loading up the off tackle
area to stop Hammer.
The reasons we use the shift at Scott’s
Branch are:
• Gives us an Identity and Uniqueness (Fun for the
players)
• Maximum movement on all downs (Move our
personnel around to take advantage of their skills)
• Confuse the defense (Get the defense out of position)
• Multiple formations (requires our opponents to
spend more time game planning our formations and
less time game planning how to stop our offense)
• Improve OL Play (create better blocking angles for our
linemen to block)
BASIC RULES OF SHIFTING
Contrary to popular belief, we do not shift to cause the defense to jump
offside. (Cutups of teams jumping)To us that is a bonus when it does happen.
But there are certain rules, I believe, you must employ if you are going to use
shifting as a part of your offensive scheme.
• Must be done on every offensive play. This keeps the defense
back on their heels and not be able to pin their ears back.
• Must have a default formation. (Formation you will line up in
when you break the huddle, such as Beast, Stack I, Wishbone, etc.)
• You must be able to run Wedge or Hammer (Power) from your
default formation. (We snap the ball on the first sound at least 5 -
7 times a ball game just to keep the defense honest).
• Change your default formation every week. (Self Scout yourself
and give your opponent a lot to prepare for)
• Be crisp and sharp when you shift but don’t be in a hurry.
(Remember the philosophy of the offense, you want to
methodically wear them down and beat them into submission)

CADENCE
We use a simple rhythmic cadence to get things rolling and to shift. We want to keep
things simple in order to keep our players as aggressive as possible. The cadence is
Down, Go, Go, Go.
Let me explain how we do it. Play ex. 2 Eagle Ray Hammer Rt on 3
• Down – Nothing happens during this command except when we will snap
on the first sound. Down is the first sound. All players are in a two point
stance and in the default formation.
• Go – This is the command to shift to the formation called in the huddle
(Eagle). The Linemen will do the Cowboy Shift and the Backs and the
Receivers will go to their respective alignments. Let me also say that
Linemen will also shift if the formation dictates it. QB will be very
animated on this command.
• Go – This command is our motion (Ray). Again the QB will be very
animated on this call.
• Go – The ball will be snapped on this command. This what we do every
week. This is the reason that we don’t have illegal procedure penalties.
The snap count stays the same from the 1st day of practice to the last.
• All of the shifting and movement may look good, but the only reason we
do it is to be able to run the core with more bang and keep the defense
on their heels.
PRACTICE PLAN
WE DO NOTHAVE ELABORATE PRACTICE SCHEDULES
• WE ARE HAVE CONTACT EVERYDAY. (CONTROL) CAN’T TEACH AGGRESSIVENESS VS AIR. INJURY IS NOT
AN ISSUE BECAUSE OF CONDITIONING.
• WE PRACTICE THE SCRIPT.
• MONDAY - INTRO DEFAULT FORMATION FOR THE WEEK, NEW FORMATIONS AND SETS, AND NEW RUN
PLAYS.
• TUESDAY - ALL RUN PLAYS, INTRO SCREENS
• WEDNESDAY - INTRO PASS GAME, RUN SCREEN PLAYS
• THURSDAY - RED ZONE PLAYS , PASSING GAMES, SELECTED PLAYS
• FRIDAY - OFFENSE WILL RUN THROUGH EACH PLAY ON THE SCRIPT.
• DURING PRE – GAME WE WILL RUN HAMMER RT AND LT FOR TEN MINUTES BEFORE WE GO BACK TO
THE LOCKER ROOM. USUALLY AT 6:45.
