ACTIVATING THE BATTERY Do not activate battery (fill with battery acid) until battery is actually placed in service. Ba certain to read previous warnings betore activating the bat- 1, Lift the seat, Remove the battery cover by press- —+— ing in on the sides and titing up, See figure 2 inset. Remove the battery from the rear frame. 2. Open the battery pack. Be careful nol to puncture: the box. It contains the battery fuid (acid) in a plastic container and one short plastic tube. 3, Place the battery on a table or workbench. Make certain the long plastic drain tube is in place on the vent elbow. 4. Remove the six fil caps from the top of the bat- tery with a scrowdriver. Be careful not to:damage the fil caps. Seo figure 2. Place the battery fluid container on the table or workbench. Carefully cut off tip of the spout ang attach the short plastic tube provided. Do not squeeze the container whan cutting tip. 6. Fill each battery cell slowly and carefully to the UPPER LEVEL line marked on battery. Seo fig: 5 — ure 3. Use caution as the acid level wil rise rapid- ly after the bottom of the coll is filled. 7. Allow battery to stand for 30 minutes with the fill caps removed, While the plates absorb acid. 8, If acid tevel has fallen after the 80 minute stand- ing period, refill each ceil with battery acid to the UPPER LEVEL ling on battery. Replace the fill caps, © Belore discarding the empty container, neutralize any residue with baking soda and rinse container with water, Puncture container several betore discarding 10. Charge the battery after the 30 minute period. SLOW CHARGE THE BATTERY (D0. NOT FAST CHARGE). Charge the battery at a maximum bench rate of 2 amperes until the specific gravity reading is 1.265. Charge for a minimum of 3 hours and @ maximum of 5 hours. NOTE: This engina is equipped with an alternator The current for the battery charger altemator is unrog- tulated. During normal operation, i is only necessary to charge the battery: 1. When itis activated forthe first time. 2. Betore winter storage, 3. Betore using the lawn tractor atter winter storage. After battery has been charged, add only distilled water. De not add acid. INSTALLING THE BATTERY 11. Raiso the seat, 2, Make certain the positive cable (heavy red wire) ‘and negative cablo (heavy black wire) are routed ‘outside the battery opening. 3. Place the battery Inside the opening co that the positive terminal is toward the front of the unit <— See figure 4. Route the battery drain tube down beside the battery 4, Remove the hex bolt from the positive (+) termi- nal. Piace the positive cable on the positive termi- nal. See figura 4. Secure with hex bot. Be caretul ‘not to lose the nut inside the terminal. 5. Secure the negative cable to the negative (-) tor- ‘minal in the same manner. Replace the battery Cover aver the positive terminal, Lower the seat. 6. Insert the drain tube through the eable tie which is atiached to the transaxie reinforcement brackat on the right side of the unit, See figure §, Be cor- tain drain tube is routed away from the whee! rm. Pull on end of cable tie to tighten (do not collapse drain tube). Trim excess end of cable tie and drain tube, ATTACHING THE STEERING WHEEL 1. Remove the hex lock nut and cupped washer rom tha steering shaft, and remove the steering bellow. Pry the steering cap off the center of the ‘steering wheel 2. Attach one end of steering beliaw to the steering ‘wheel a8 shown in figure 6. ‘3, Position the front wheots of the tractor so they are pointing straight forward. 4, Place the steering wheel and steering bellow over tha stoering shaft, positioning steering wheel as desired. 5. Place the washer with the cupped side down over ‘he steoring shaft. Secure with hex lock nut. See —— fou, 6. Place the stoaring cap over the center of the FIGURE 6. ‘steering wheel and seat it with your hand, ATTACHING THE CHUTE DEFLECTOR WARNING: Do not operate your unit unless the chute deflector has been Properly installed. 1. Remove the hex bolts, cupped washers and hex nuts which arp attached to the dack next to the chute opening 2. Piace the chute deflector in position as shown in ——ligure 7. Secure with hardware just removed. ‘Cupped side of washers goes against the chute deflector. TIRE PRESSURE ‘The tires on your unit may be over-inflated for ship- ping purposes. Freduce the tire pressure before oper- ating the unit. Recommended operating tire pressure: is approximately 12 p.s.\. (check sidewall of tra for tire ‘manutacturer’s recommanded pressure). WARNING: Maximum tire pressure under any circumstances is 30 p.s.l. Equal tire pressure should be maintained on all tires, nthe’ —-Leveuine THe becx With unit on hard, level surface, measure the distance fram the bottom edge of the center of the left side of deck to the ground, Measure the same distance just behind the chute area on the right side of the deck. Or, place the Blades in a straight line, and measure the distance from the outside €dge of the blade tips to the ground. Adjust the it link on the loft side of the deck as nec essary. See figure 8. Recheck the adjustment CONTROLS FIGURE 9, THROTTLE CONTROL ‘The throttle contral is used to regulate the engine speed. To gat maximum olficiency from cutting, the throttle should be in the FAST position when operat- Ing the mower. See figure 9, CHOKE CONTROL ‘The choke control is located on the dashboard and is operated manually. Details for the choke operation are covered in the Separate engine manual packed with your unit. See figure 8. ‘SHIFT LEVER The shift lever is tocated in the centar of the console -and has three postions, FORWARD, NEUTRAL and REVERSE. Sea figure 9. The clutch-brake pedal must be depressed and the lawn tractor must not be mov- ling when shihing gears. Do nat force tha shift lever. Rolease the cluich-brake pedal slightly to-line up the shifting collar in the transmission, Then try to shift gears. ‘SPEED CONTROL LEVER ‘The speed control lever is located on the fender. Soo figure 10. The speed contro! lever allows you to regu late the ground speed of the lawn vactor. To select the ground speed, depress clutch pedal. Move speed control lever out of the notches and backward to slow avin tractor, forward to increase speed. When dosired ‘speed has been obtained, release lever in that posi: ‘on. Whenaver clutch Is engaged, unit will automat ‘cally go to the pre-set speed. IGNITION SWITCH Turn the key to the START position to start the ‘engine. When the engine is running, let the key return to the ON position. To stop the engine, turn the key to the left to the OFF position and remove it to prevent ‘accidental starting. See figure & LIGHT SWITCH Push the fight switch to tum on the ights, The fights \wil only operate when the engine is running AMMETER The ammeter registers. the rate of battery charge oF discharge, The ammeter will register on the discharg- Ing sie when starting the engine. it should register an the apposite side (charging) when the engine is run- fring in the fast position until the battery is completely charged. With a fully charged battery or with the engine idling, the ammeter will not show @ charge. ‘Soe figure 9, CLUTCH-BRAKE PEDAL ‘The clutch-brake pedal is located on the left side of the lawn tractor. Depressing the clutch-brake pedal part way disengages the clutch. Pressing the pedal all the way down disengages the clutch and engages the «isc brake. See figure 9. NOTE: The ciuich-brake pedal must be depressed to start the engine. Control! ‘Lever SS FIGURE 10. PARKING BRAKE Tho speed control lover is used to set the parking brake. To set the parking brake, depress the clutch- brake pedal. Move the speed contol lever out of the Notches to desired position. Release the speed con- trol laver and the cluteh-brake pedal. To release the parking brake, depress tho cluich- brake pedal and move the speed control lover out of the notches to the desired position, Release the peed control lever and the clutet-brake pedal NOTE: Tho parking brake must be set if he operator eaves the saat with the engine running. INTERLOCKS (Not Shown) Interlock safety switches are located by the clutch- brake pedal, the fit lever, the shift lever and under the seat Before the engine will start, the clutch-brake pedal must be depressed all the way and the lift lever must be in the disengaged position Before the unit can be shifted into reverse or if the operator leaves the seat, the lift lever must be in the disengaged position CUTTING CONTROLS A. LIFT LEVER 6 lift lever is used to raise and lower the cutting deck and to engage and disengage the blades, Pulling it all the way back and locking it eisengages the blades, NOTE: The lift lever must be in the disengaged posi- tion when siarting the engine, when shitting into ‘reverse and if the operator leaves the saat. S00 figure it B. DECK LIFT INDICATOR ‘The dock lit indicator marks the position being used for the lif lever. Select the Kit lever position desired, press the indicator lover outward, move it to the pos tion immediately below the litt lever and release the indicator lever. Move the deck lt ingi- ‘ator so that the lift lever can be rotumed to the same position ater it is raised, 2. READ OPERATOR'S MANUAL LOCK, SUT GAS AND OIL FILL-UP Check oil level and add it necessary. Service the engine with gasoline as instructed In the separate engine manual packed with your tractor. Read Instructions carefully. IMPORTANT: Your tractor is shipped with oil; hawev- ef, you must chock the oil level before operating. Ba ‘careful not to overfill, WARNING: Nevor fil fuel tank indoors, with engine running or while engine is hot. STARTING THE ENGINE 1, Depross the clutch-brake pedal and set the park- ing braka, 2. Place the lift lever in the DISENGAGED position, See figure 11, IMPORTANT: This unit is equipped with a safety intertock system for your protection. The purpose of the safety interlock system is to prevent the engine from cranking oF starting untess the clutch-braka Pedal is: depressed and the lit lover is in the disen- ‘gaged position. In addition, the lit lever must be in the disengaged position when the unit is put into reverse or the engine will shut otf. if the operator leaves the seat with the lft lever engaged andior without sotting the parking brake, the engine will shut of. WARNING: Do not operate the lawn trac- {tor It the interlock system is maifunction- Ing because it is a safety device, ‘designed for protection. 3. Set the throttle controt in the FAST position. See figure 9. 4. Pull out choke knob {9 choke engine (a warm ‘engine may not require choking), 5. Turn the ignition kay to the START position. When the engine is running, let the key return the ON position. See figure 6. Push choke knob in gradually. Move the throttle Control to desired engine speed. STOPPING THE ENGINE ‘Tum the ignition key to the left to the OFF position, Rlomove the key to prevent accidental starting IMPORTANT: it you strike a foreign object, stop the engine. Remove wire from spark plug, thoroughly inspect the unit for any damage, and repair the dam- age belore restarting and operating the mower. NOTE: If any problems are encountered, refer to the Trouble Shooting Guide on page 18. OPERATING THE LAWN TRACTOR 1, Set the desired cutting height. 2. Startthe engine as instructed previously. 3. Move throttle contro! to 3/4 oF full throttle to pra- vent strain on the engine and to operate the cut- ting blades. 4. Place the shitt lever in either the FORWARD or REVERSE position. WARNING: Look to the rear before back- ing up. 5. Release the parking brake by depressing the clutch-brake pedal. pressing outward on the speed control lever and maving to desired posi- tion. Place shift lever in either FORWARD or REVERSE, and follow normal operating proce- dures. OPERATING THE CUTTING BLADES The cutting blades may be engaged while the lawn tractor Is moving or standing stil, DO NOT engage the cutting blades abruptly as the sudden belt tension ‘on the pulley may cause the engine to stall, WARNING: Keep feet and hands away from the dlecharge opening, the blades OF any part of the deck. When the unit Is used for other than mowing operations, the blade drive should be disengaged. Mave the lift lever into the DISENGAGED position to raise the deck and disengage the blades. CUTTING DECK ENGAGEMENT ADJUSTMENT The cutting deck engagement may be adjusted to to the stabilizer shaft assembly. Adjust the nut so the braki starts to engage when the brake lover is 1/4" to 5/16" away from the axle housing, LUBRICATION WARNING: Always stop engine and dis- connect spark plug wires before clean- ling, lubricating or doing any kind of work ‘on lawn tractor. STEERING GEARS Lubricate teeth of steering gears with automotive mult-pumose grease after every 25 hours of opera: tion or once a season. Removal for Sharpening or Replacement WARNING: Be sure to disconnect and ‘ground the spark plug wire and remove ignition key before working on the cutting bblade to prevent accidental engine start- ling. Protect hands by using heavy gloves ‘or a rag to grasp the cutting biades. 1. Remove the large bolt and lock washer which hholds the blade and adapter to the blade spindle. 2. Remove the blade and adaptor from the spindle. 3. I the blade or blade adapter needs replacing femove the two small bolts, lock washers and ‘nuts which hold the blade to the adaptor. B. Sharpening Ramove the cutting blades by following the directions cf the preceding section When sharpening the blades, follow the original angle of ging as a guide. It is extremely Important that ach cutting edge receives an equal amount of grind- ing to prevent an unbalanced blade. An unbalanced blade will cause excessive vibration when rotating at high speeds, may cause damage to tha mower and could break, causing personal injury. The blade can be tested for balance by balancing it on a round shalt screwdriver. Remove metal from the heavy side unti it balances event. NOTE: 11 is recommended that the biade always be removed trom the adapter for the best test of balance. ‘C. Disconnect the stabilizer plate from the stabilizer shaft assembly by removing the hairpin clips and flat washers and sliding out the rod. Refer to fig- ure 12, 8.
