06-77 Lab 09 Quality and Testing

This lab report summarizes testing done to check the colorfastness to water spotting of textile samples according to AATCC Test Method 104. The test involved dropping distilled water onto dyed textile samples and evaluating any shade change after drying using a gray scale. The results found that the samples received a gray scale rating of 5, indicating no staining was produced by the water, demonstrating the good quality and compatibility of the dye used. In conclusion, the dye showed very little or no loss of strength in the shade of the textile when exposed to water.

Abstract:

AATCC Test Method 104 is used to determine the colorfastness to water spotting. It is
applicable to dyed, printed or other colored fabric and to the testing of dyestuffs as applied to
textiles. This test method is intended for evaluating the resistance of the shade change of textile
of all kinds by water spotting. These tests are very important from quality control aspect. As
customers demand the specific fastness and one should meet the requirements of customers.

1. Introduction

1.1. Background:

Testing is basically an assessment of the material to check either it is according to demand or

not. In case of textiles the importance of testing can’t be nullified. There is some standards
established world wide for these tests so the tests are performed according to conditions set
by these standards. This test method is designed to evaluate the resistance to water spotting
of dyed, printed or otherwise colored textile fabrics. The test method does not determine
whether the discoloration is removable.

1.2. Objective:

 To grade the sample obtained after water spotting test.

 To grade the staining against Gray Scale for Color staining.

1.3. Theory:

To check shade change in colored textile sample by water AATCC established a test method
namely AATCC-104 using Gray Scale for staining. The test specimen is spotted with
distilled or de-ionized water and evaluation is made of change of color, after wetting and
after drying.

2. Equipment and Materials:

 Test tube
 Distilled water
 Pipette
 Dyed Textile Cloth
 Gray Scale for Staining

3. Procedure:

4
i. A dyed specimen was taken.
ii. Distilled water was dropped through pipette on specimen.
iii. After drying the dyed specimen, shade change from that portion was checked using
grey scale for color change.

4. Results:

The Gray Scale rating for water spotting was 5

5. Discussion:
The rating was 5 showing that no staining was produced on fabric due to water.

6. Conclusion:

The rating 5 showed that no staining was produced. It showed that the dye used was of good
quality and compatibility with the fabric resulted in very little or no loss of strength in the
shade of specimen.
