Capacity Exercise

The document discusses a three step batch production process and its capacity problem. It provides the setup times and production times for each machine and asks to determine the overall capacity for different batch sizes and identify the bottleneck machine. It also asks how long it would take to produce 30 parts with a batch size of 60.

Capacity Problem

Consider a batch flow process consisting of three sequential machines (steps) as shown
below:

Machine 1 -> Machine 2 -> Machine 3 -> Exit

Machine 1 has a setup time of 20 minutes and machines 2 and 3 have no setup
times. Machine 1 has a production time of 1 minute per part. Machines 2 and 3 have
production times of 2 and 1.5 minutes per part respectively. Work is processed in
batches at each step. Before a batch is processed machine 1 needs to be setup.

a.c Assume the batch size is 60 parts. What is then the capacity of the entire
process?
b.c For this batch size which machine is the bottleneck?
c.c If the batch size changes to 15 parts, which machine is now the bottleneck?
d.c Using a production batch size of 60 units, how long would it take to produce 30
parts starting with an empty process assuming that the units in the batch are
transferred together between machines except for the exit of the last machine?
e.c What batch size do you recommend? Why?
