Good evening everyone! My name is Melissa Merritt
My presentation tonight is going to focus on digital etiquette.
C. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use
of technology and information
CHANGE SLIDE
It basically means that we all use technology in the public realm whether it be on the internet or
in person and other people around us expect us to use technology in a certain way that is deemed
to be socially acceptable
We will be looking at several forms of technology and considering three different aspects of their
use
CHANGE SLIDE
How can users take advantage of the technology and respect the rights and feelings of
others when using technology?

I have emailed a sheet to your WebCT e-mail accounts that hopefully you have printed out so
that you can refer back to these questions throughout the presentation
Technology Types:
We will focus on 5 different types of technology and we will discuss ways in which you as
an educator can use technology appropriately and model good digital etiquette for your
students because they see you in the classroom setting and they also carefully scrutinize
your behavior when they see you out in public as well
When participating and offering examples you can offer examples of behavior that teachers
or students might exhibit
E-mail
How many of you use this technology?
How can users take advantage of the technology and respect the rights and feelings of
others when using technology?
Do you skip including a courteous greeting and closing in your emails because you
believe they are not necessary?
This would be comparable to walking up to someone and initiating a conversation with someone
without saying hello or walking away without saying goodbye
Do you forward emails with everyone’s email address in the To: field?
Do you email websites asking for information they do in fact have online for your
convenience simply because you don’t want to take the time to read?

Cell phones

others when using technology?
Do you talk on your phone when you are being assisted by a service worker?
This is rude and prevents workers from being able to do their jobs
Do you turn off your phone or put it on vibrate when you are in the movies, class or
other similar settings?
Do you text or talk on the phone while driving? This is extremely unsafe and highly
illegal.
Do you text or make phone calls when you are in social settings with friends?

Teaching tips:
What kind of teaching tips would you offer other educators when dealing with students and
technology use in the classroom?
The number one thing I would like for you to get from my presentation is that the internet
and other technologies are still a part of the real world and generally the same types of
rules and expectations for etiquette apply in situations with technology as they would in
situations without the technology
Generally, your students are probably going to know more about technology than you and
that is why it is important to educate yourself so that you model good behavior for your
students so that they can practice good digital etiquette, stay safe, and realize that actions
online and with technology can have very negative consequences in the real world
Make the rules regarding technology use in your classroom be very clear on the first day of
class!
Be consistent and fair in enforcing the AUP of the school and your own individual classroom
rules.
Don’t make a bigger deal out of inappropriate technology use than you have to!
Make sure the consequences fit the infraction.
