Mobile Communication LAB 07

The document summarizes an experiment to study the real-time clock (RTC) of a mobile phone. It includes the objective, apparatus used, circuit diagram, theory of RTC and lithium batteries, procedure followed, and readings taken at different test points of the mobile trainer circuit. The results show that the voltages and frequencies were successfully observed for different states of the mobile trainer like when it was on, off, and with the battery removed, validating the functioning of the RTC.

Theory:

RTC: A real-time clock (RTC) is a Mobile clock (most often in the form of an integrated circuit) that
keeps track of the current time. Although the term often refers to the devices in personal
computers, servers and embedded systems, RTCs are present in almost any electronic device which
needs to keep accurate time. RTCs often have an alternate source of power, so they can continue to
keep time while the primary source of power is off or unavailable. This alternate source of power is
normally a lithium battery in older systems, but some newer systems use a super capacitor because
they are rechargeable and can be soldered. The alternate power source can also supply power to
battery backed RAM.

Lithium batteries are disposable (primary) batteries that have Li coin cells and support the mobile
clock for 30 minutes.

Procedure:

1-The trainer was switched on without charger. Frequency and voltage were observed at Tp 9

2- The trainer was switched off. Frequency and voltage were observed at Tp 9.

3- The trainer was again switched on with the charging enabled, frequency and voltage was
observed at Tp 9 as well as Tp 18.

4- The battery was removed and readings were taken.

Readings:

AT Tp 9

Trainer State F (with CH) V (with Ch) F (w/o Ch) V (w/o) Ch

ON 12.2 KHz 1.47 V 11.9 KHz 1.47 V

OFF 11.9 KHz 1.47 V 7.18 KHz 1.65 V

Batt. Removed 2 KHz 0V

At Tp 18

Trainer State F (with Ch) V (with Ch)

ON 2.57 V

OFF 1.6 MHZ 2.56 V

Result: The voltages and frequencies for the desired states were successfully observed.
