Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Kentucky to a poor family. He taught himself and became a successful lawyer through hard work and determination despite facing failures and having little formal education. In 1860, Lincoln was elected as the 16th President of the United States. During his presidency, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation and gave the famous Gettysburg Address promoting equality and democracy. In 1865, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C.

Abraham Lincoln who became the 16th President of the United States of America was born on
12 February 1809 in Kentucky.He was born into a very poor family and thus he had to work at a
neighbouring farm to help the family.

Lincoln did not have a formal education as he did not attend school.However,he taught himself
by attending parttime classes whenever he could.He was an avid reader and he would read any
book he could get hold off.This self-taught man went on to become a very successful lawyer.He
was an honest and hardworking man who has determined to succeed.He was an ambitious man
who wanted to become an important man.He stood for elections several times to join senate but
failed many times.Although he faced a lot of failures he was never discouraged.On the
contrary,he accepted these failures as challenges in his life to strive harder.

In 1860,Lincoln was elected to be the President of the United States of America.Lincoln who
stood at 6 feet 4 inches(192.4 cm) tall was tallest U.S President.He was well known for the tall
hat he wore and his long bushy beard.He was married to Mary Todd and he had four sons.

In 1863,Lincoln made his famous Gettysburg Address in which he told his people that all men
are born equal.It is here that he said the famous words on democracy,´Goverment of the
people,by the people,for the people´.After Civil War in 1865 while watching a show,Abraham
Lincoln was assassinated by an actor named John Wilkes Booth at Ford¶s Theatre in
Washington.
