S2.8 - The Puzzle - Instructor Directions

The instructor is to pass out a puzzle activity to students but not allow them to start until instructions are given. Students must solve math problems correctly to receive letters to unscramble words on the back that spell out "Algebra Rocks!". Working with partners, students can have the instructor check up to three problems at a time for correct letters or just be told if incorrect without the solution. The first to finish gets four stamps, second gets three stamps, and third gets two stamps, while all others get one stamp for completing the activity.

8 – The Puzzle – Instructor Directions

1. Pass “the puzzle” out to students, but ask them not to begin working until you have finished giving them instructions.
2. Explain to students:
 The goal of this activity is to get questions right in order to receive letters that will help the students unscramble
the “puzzle” words on the back.
 I (the instructor) will check up to three problems at a time. If a problem is correct, I will give you a letter. If it is
incorrect, I will only tell you that it is incorrect. It is your job to find the mistake, and/or work with your partner
to find the mistake.
 After you have completed all of the problems and received all of the letters, your goal is to unscramble the
letters to complete the word puzzle at the bottom of page two.
 The first individual or group to finish the activity will earn four stamps, second – three stamps, third – two
stamps, and everyone that finishes the activity will earn one stamp.
3. The words the students are trying to get are:
 Algebra Rocks!
