Differences Between Stationery and Progressive Waves

Stationary waves have points called nodes where displacement is permanently zero, while in progressive waves all particles oscillate about fixed positions. In stationary waves, amplitude of vibration differs between neighboring points but in progressive waves all particles oscillate with the same amplitude. Stationary waves have all points between nodes in phase with each other but half wavelengths are out of phase, whereas in progressive waves each particle is out of phase with its neighbors.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN STATIONARY AND PROGRESSIVE WAVES

1. In stationary waves there are points where the displacement is

permanently zero. (nodes)

In progressive waves all particles oscillate about fixed positions.

Draw two labelled diagrams to illustrate this.

2. In stationary waves every point along a λ/4 has a different amplitude of

vibration from neighbouring points.

In progressive waves every particle oscillates with the same amplitude

as its neighbours.
Draw two labelled diagrams to illustrate this.

3. In stationary waves, all points between nodes are IN PHASE with each
other. However, particles within one ½ λ are π rad out of phase with the
next ½ λ.

In progressive waves, each particle within one cycle is out of phase

with its neighbours.
Draw two labelled diagrams to illustrate this

4. In progressive waves energy is transmitted in the direction of travel of

the wave.
In a stationary wave, energy is said to be ‘localised’.
