412/1 42/1 OED, LEVEL UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE ann. (ALT. B) paper | LOCAL EXAMINATIONS SYNDICATE Tuesday GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION 3JULY 1962 2 hours Moming MATHEMATICS ORDINARY LEVEL, ALTERNATIVE B Parer 1 (Two hours and a half) Answer all the questions in Section I and any tour in Section II. All working must be clearly shown; it should be done on the same sheet as the rest of the answer. Mathematical tables, squared paper and draiving paper are provided. Secmiow I, [52 marks] 1, Mathematical tables must not he used in this question, (i) State the value of 170-6041 (a) correct to three significant figures, (b) correct to five significant figures, (ii) Taking 1 in. to be 2540 em., calculate the diameter, in inches, of a gun-barrel of diameter 77 mm, Give your answer correct to the nearest hundredth of an inch, (iii) A telephone bil] amounts to £18, 10s, 5d. This total inchdes a rental of £12, the cost of trunk ealls, amounting to £4, 14s, 7d., and also the cost of local calls at 24d. each, Find how many local calls were made, 2 (i) Aline AB, 2 ft, long, is divided et P into two parts AP, PB in the ratio p:q. Express the length of AP in inches. edo 4 (iii) Make n the subject of the formula « = (Gi) Solve the equation 8. Accircle is drawn through the vertices of an acute-angled triangle ABC, The tangent at B to this circle moots the line drawn through C parallel to AB at the point X. Prove that the triangles ABO, BOX are similar. Given that 4B = 9em. and XC = 16 om., use these similar triangles to calculate (i) the length of BC, (ji) the numerical value of BY 4, QO] & € = P Qa R ae The diagram represents a framework for supporting a roof. The outer beams TP, 7S are each of length 12 ft., the inner beams 7Q, TR are inclined at 65° to the horizontal and the height of the framework is 7 ft. Calculate (i) the angle P; (ii) the width Ps; (iii) the length of 7Q. 5. Using ruler and compasses only, construct (i) the inscribed circle of the triangle LAN in which IM = 120m, LN = 10cm, and MN = 7 em; (ii) the two points P and Q on this circle which are equi- distant from M and N. Secrion II, [48 marks] Answer any four questions in this section, 6, Aman’s salary is £990 a year, but income tax is deducted before he receives payment. Of his total salary, two-ninths and also £410 are free of tax. Of the remainder, the first £60 is taxed at Is. 9d. in the pound, the next £150 at 4s. 3d. in the pound, the next £150 at 6s. 3d. in the pound, and the balance, if any, at 73. 9d, in the pound, Calculate (i) the total tax paid on his salary for the year; (ii) the percentage increase in tax if, in the following year, his total salary increases by 10%, 7. A rectangle is 10 om, long and 3 em, wide, Each side is then increased by z em. (i) Form an equation and find the value of z if the perimeter is doubled. (ii) Form an equation and find the value of « if the length of the diagonal of the new rectangle is 17 em. 3 8, Explain briefly, with the aid of a diagram, what you understand by the converse of the theorem that angles in the same segment of a circle are equal, Q c B In the figure XABC and XPQR are squares. AP and CR meet at Y. Prove that (i) the triangles XAP and XOR are congruent; (ii) the points X, Y, A and C are coneyelic; (iii) the angle XYC is equal to 45°. 9. (i) Tt is known that P varies inversely as the square of Q. Corresponding pairs of values are shown in the following table: f t t+1 Q 5 4 Calculate the value of t. (ii) Ilustrate on three separate sketch-graphs the relation- ships between y and z in the cases (a), (b), and (c) described below, (Draw the usual z-and y-axes, each starting at 0 units. Graph paper and tables of numerical values are not necessary.) (a) a inches is the radius of a circle and y square inches is its area. (6) 2 degrees is the temperature recorded on a centigrade seale and y degrees is the same temperature measured on a Fahrenheit scale, (c) z inches is the length of a rectangle of constant area and y inches is its breadth. [TURN OVER 10,¥ The base of the triangular wedge shown in the figure is a rectangle 8 in. long and 6 in, wide. The vertical faces ABO and PQR are equilateral triangles of side 6 in, Calculate (the angle between the diagonals PB and PC; (ii) the angle between the plane PBC and the base; (iii) the angle between the diagonal PC and the base. 11. (i) The diagram shows, ona re ELEVATION duced seale, the plan and elevation of a spherical wire cage, of diameter 8.om., consisting of five circles, three of which are horizontal and two vertical. In the elevation the points A, B,C, D and F are equally spaced on the semi- cirele. Sketch the general appearance of the cage and calculate the total length of wire required to make the cage. [Take = to be 3142.) PLAN (ii) The seale of a map is Gin. to 1 mile, A cross-rouds X, on the 350 ft. contour, is linked with a junction J, on the 600 ft. contour, bya straight road with a uniform gradient. The distance on the map between X and J is 14 in. Calculate the length (in feet) of the road surface which joins X to J.
