Card Catalogues Libraries Context Data Files Webpage

Metadata describes three aspects of digital documents and data: definition, structure, and administration. By describing contents and context, metadata greatly increases the quality of original data and files. A metadata repository is a database that stores data about data (metadata) and provides consistent access to data, which may be drawn from separate physical or virtual sources and include information about how to access or details about specific data.

Metadata is loosely defined as data about data.

Metadata is traditionally
found in the card catalogues of libraries and is today commonly used to
describe three aspects of digital documents and data: 1) definition, 2)
structure and 3) administration. By describing the contents and context of
data files, the quality of the original data/files is greatly increased. For
example, a webpage may include metadata specifying what language it's
written in, what tools were used to create it, and where to go for more on
the subject, allowing browsers to automatically improve the experience of
users.

A metadata repository is a database of data about data (metadata). The

purpose of the metadata repository is to provide a consistent and reliable
means of access to data. The repository itself may be stored in a physical
location or may be a virtual database, in which metadata is drawn from
separate sources. Metadata may include information about how to access
specific data, or more detail about it, among a myriad of possibilities
