N A T D R : Number of Term First Term at Common Differennce Common Ratio

The document discusses arithmetic and geometric sequences. It provides examples of finding terms, common differences or ratios, number of terms, and sums of arithmetic and geometric sequences when given certain information about the sequences. Formulas for the nth term and sum of the first n terms of arithmetic and geometric sequences are also presented. Examples problems are given to be worked out involving finding individual terms, sums, number of terms, common differences or ratios, and first terms of various arithmetic and geometric sequences.

1.1 Arithmetic Sequence

In mathematics, an arithmetic progression or arithmetic sequence is a sequence of numbers such that

the difference of any two successive members of the sequence is a constant. For instance, the sequence
3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 is an arithmetic progression with common difference, d=2, first term, a=3, and the
number of terms, n=6.

Example 1: Given the following arithmetic sequence: 2,7,12,17,22,27,32,37,42. Find:

i) The first term of the sequence.

ii) The common difference of the sequence.
iii) The number of terms of the sequence.
iv) The tenth term.
v) The sum of the first ten terms.

Solution:
Example 2: Find the number of terms in the following arithmetic sequence: −20 ,−15 ,−10 , … ,175 .
Hence, find the sum of all terms.

Example 3: The sixth term in an arithmetic progression is 25 and the sum of the first six terms in the
progression is 80. Find the first term and the common difference.
1.2 Geometric Sequence

In mathematics, a geometric progression, also known as a geometric sequence, is a sequence of

numbers where each term after the first is found by multiplying the previous one by a fixed non-zero
number called the common ratio. For example, the sequence 2, 6, 18, 54 is a geometric progression with
common ratio, r =3, the first term, a=2, and the number of term, n=4 .

Example 1: List out the common ratio, first term, and number of term for the following sequence:

Sequence r a n
1,2,4,8,16,32
3,9,27,81,243,729

-5,10,-20,40

20,10,5,5/2,5/4

1/3,1/12,1/48,1/192,1/76
8

Example 2: For each of the sequence that listed in example 1, find T 20 and S17.
Example 3: The third term of a geometric progression is 360 and the sixth term is 1215. Find:

i) The first term.

ii) The tenth term.
iii) The sum of the first ten terms.
Do It Yourself…

1. The sum of the first 12 terms of an arithmetic sequence is 1,188. If the sixth term is 89, find the
first term, the common difference, and the 17 th term.

2. The sum of the first n terms of the progression 36 , 34 , 32 , … is 0 . Find the value n and the
tenth term.

3. Find the sum of the first 13 terms of the progression 4 0 , 20 ,10 , 5 , … .
