Folding The Saayi in 9 Easy Steps: Fig. 1 Fig. 2

This document provides instructions for folding a paper airplane called a Saayi in 9 steps. The Saayi is a unique glider that allows the wings to be lifted independently, increasing the angle of attack and inducing more lift. By lifting one region of the folded paper relative to another, the dihedral angle can be adjusted for better flight performance. The instructions emphasize checking and adjusting this angle with each throw to prevent the plane from crashing.

Folding the Saayi in 9 easy steps

Fig. 1 Fig. 2

Take an A4 sheet. Fold in half

vertically and open back out.
Then turn the model over. Fold the tips towards the centre
crease.

Fold point A behind point B. i.e.

fold the plane behind in half.

Again fold the slanting edges at

the top towards the centre crease.

Fold the tip A upwards.
Crease well and then unfold.

Fold ‘3’ along the dashed-green
(which was creased in Fig. 7).
Do observe the blue unfold lines.

This is how the result would be.

See if you got the behind right
Now turn the model around.

Mountain-fold the whole plane in half.

Fig. 12

Let us call the line AB as the waist-line. Fold the wings such
that point A falls on point B i.e. the waist-line is halved.
Fold the winglets of a width equal to the fuselage i.e. 2.1cm

Do the same for the other wing.

Front view

Open out the model so that the front view looks like the above. The
dihedral angle is a must for good flight. Throw the plane by
catching at the centre of gravity which rests on the waist-line of the
model. Every time you throw the plane do not forget the dihedral
angle.

You will find that the Saayi is a great glider.

If your plane is crashing to the ground, go to the next step.

Flatten the model as shown above.

Note that the region of the plane AB will be represented by a
blue line and the region BC by a pink line.
Hold region AB by the left hand and region BC by your right
hand at the regions indicated by the text boxes.

This is the climax of Saayi.

Notice that the region BC can be lifted relative to AB. This lift
increases the angle of attack and thus induces more lift on the
plane.
Lift region BC. Refold the wings and winglets. Put some
dihedral and fly it. I am sure your plane did not crash to the
ground. Each time you attempt to fly the Saayi, recheck the
angle of BC relative to AB.

I believe this way of increasing the lift is unique and I haven’t

found such an option for other paper airplanes.
This is the particular advantage that Saayi has over other
planes.

I request you to fold at least two Saayi models before coming to
conclusions.
