Capacity Utilization Homework Problems

The document contains three capacity utilization homework problems. Each problem provides information about the design capacity, effective capacity, and actual output of a different system. It then asks to calculate the utilization and efficiency for each system based on these metrics. The solutions show that for problem 1, utilization was 75% and efficiency was 96.4%, for problem 2 utilization was 86.4% and efficiency was 95%, and for problem 3 utilization was 50% and efficiency was 67%.

Capacity Utilization Homework Problems

1 The staff training center at a large regional hospital provides

graining sessions in CPR to all employees. Assume the capacity of
this training system was designed to be 1,800 employees per year.
Since the training center was first put in use, the program has
become more complex, so that 1,400, now, represents the most
employees that can be trained per year. In the past year, 1,350
employees were trained. Calculate the efficiency and utilization of the
system.

2 An executive conference center has the physical ability to handle

1,100 participants. However, conference management personnel
believe only 1,000 participants can be handled effectively for most
events. The last event, although forecasted to have 1,000
participants, resulted in the attendance of only 950 participants.
What are the utilization and efficiency of the conference facility

3 A fleet repair facility has the capacity to repair 800 trucks per
month. However, due to scheduled maintenance of their equipment,
management feels they can repair no more than 600 trucks per
month. Last month, two of the employees were absent several days
each and only 400 trucks were repaired. What are the utilization and
efficiency of the repair shop?

Solutions

1 efficiency = 1350 / 1400 = 0.964 = 96.4%

utilization = 350 / 1800 = 75%

2 design capacity = 1,100 participants

effective capacity = 1,000 participants

actual output = 950 participants

utilization = actual output / design capacity = 950/ 1100 = 86.4%

efficiency = actual output / effective capacity = 950/ 1000 = 95%

3 Design capacity = 800 trucks

Effective capacity = 600 trucks

Actual output = 400 trucks

Utilization = actual output / design capacity = 400 /800 = 50%

Efficiency = actual output / effective capacity = 400 / 60= 67%
