Unit - 2: Comoponents of Information System

The document discusses the five main components of an information system: 1) People resources such as end users and IS specialists, 2) Hardware resources like computers and peripherals, 3) Software resources including operating systems, applications, and procedures, 4) Data resources which can be text, images, audio, and are stored in databases and knowledge bases, and 5) Network resources comprising communication media and infrastructure. It also outlines the key activities of an information system as input, processing, output, storage, and control of system performance.

COMOPONENTS OF
INFORMATION SYSTEM

Presented by : Amit Gupta

INFORMATION SYSTEM RESOURCES

 There are five resources in information system

resources

1. People Resources
2. Hardware Resources
3. Software Resources
4. Data Resources
5. Network resources
People Resources

 End users: The people who use an information

system or the information it produces.
example: managers , clerks, salesmen

 IS Specialists: The people who develop and

operate information systems based on the
requirements of end users.
example: software developers.
Hardware Resources

 Computer systems: It consists of C.P.U

containing microprocessors and a variety of
interconnected peripheral devices.

 Computer peripheral: These are devices such as

a keyboards, mouse, printer, optical disk drives.
Software Resources

 System software: It is an operating system

program which controls and supports the operation
of computer system.
 Application software: It is the program which
directs the processing for a particular use of
computers by end users.
 Procedures : It operates instructions for the people
who will use the information system.
Data Resources
– Types of data
 Text data
 Image data
 Audio data
– Data Storage
 Databases – hold processed and organized data
 Knowledge bases – hold knowledge in a variety of forms
such as facts, rules, and case examples of successful
business practices
Network Resources

 Communication media: Twisted pair wire, coaxial

cable, fiber-optic cable and microwave, cellular, and
satellite technologies.
 Network infrastructure : This generic category
emphasizes that many hardware, software and data
technologies are needed to support the operation
and use of a communications network.
Information System Activities

 Input of data resources

 Processing of data into information
 Output of information products
 Storage of data resources
 Control of system performances
 Thank you
